When each kind of work is filed

Permits by calendar month, 100 = an average month (the thin line), November 2022 through October 2024. Kinds of work do not all peak together. Each month is counted twice (once a year), so one unusual month still moves these numbers.

How Pitt County compares with other cities

From our cross-city data studies: the same measure, read the same way, for every city we cover.

How these numbers are made

Source: Pitt County open data permit tables (PittOpenData/Tables MapServer: building, electrical, plumbing, gas and manufactured-home permits), read 21 Oct 2026. We count permits issued November 2022 through October 2024; denied and withdrawn permits are left out. The county's permit tables carry no status and no final inspection date, so no finished share is shown.

Building, electrical, plumbing, gas and manufactured-home permits issued by Pitt County Planning & Development's inspections office, which covers unincorporated Pitt County and the towns that contract with it, such as Ayden, Simpson, Grifton, Grimesland, Bethel, Fountain and Falkland. Greenville, Winterville and Farmville run their own inspections, so permits inside those towns are not in this file (a Greenville or Winterville mailing address here is usually just outside the town).

  • The county's tables have no permit status and no final inspection date, so we can't say how many permits were finished or how long they took.
  • The published tables stop early: electrical permits end in November 2024 and building permits in April 2025, so the window ends in October 2024, the last month every table is complete.
  • There are no heating and air-conditioning permits in the open data: the table labelled Mechanical holds only manufactured-home set-up permits, which we count as new homes.
  • A declared job value is filed with building permits only; electrical, plumbing, gas and manufactured-home permits carry none.
  • Trade permits don't say whether the job is at a home; we treat one as a home permit when its job description says so (a dwelling, bedrooms, a mobile home and the like).
  • The ZIP code is read from the site address the county records.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
