Questions

The short answers. For how the numbers work in a particular city, see that city's page.

  • Where does the data come from? From the city or county that issued the permits: their open-data portals and permit exports. Licenses come from the state or city licensing board where it publishes a file. Home values come from the county assessor or tax roll. Each city's How the records work page names its sources.
  • How often is it updated?About once a month. Each city page shows the month its records run through. A permit filed after that isn't here yet.
  • Why isn't a contractor on here?Usually one of three reasons: they haven't pulled a permit of that kind in the window we cover, the permit was filed under a different business name, or the city doesn't publish that trade's permits. A missing record is a reason to ask, not a finding.
  • What is the score?A number from 0 to 100 built from the record: how much of this exact work they've done, how often older permits got finished, how their usual job size fits your budget, how recently they've been active, and how much of their work is near you. You set the weights, so the same firm scores differently for different people. A measure we can't calculate is left out, not guessed.
  • What isn't the score? It isn't a quality grade, a review, or a recommendation. A passed inspection says the work met code, not that it was done well, on time, or politely. Get references, a written contract and proof of insurance before you hire anyone.
  • Is it free?Yes. No account, no ads, and nobody can pay to move up the list.
  • Do you take money from contractors? No. Not for placement, not for a badge, not to remove something. If that ever changes it won't be contractors paying for position.
  • How do I check a license?Ask for the license number and look it up at the board yourself. Every city page names its board and links to the lookup. Our match goes by name and can miss a license.

Are you a contractor? Corrections

Your page is the public record of you, matched by name and license number. We only change what the public record says, so a correction starts at the source:

  • A permit is wrong or missing: ask the city permit office to fix the record. Our next monthly read picks it up.
  • A license is wrong or shows as unmatched: check the license board's entry and send us the number so we can match it.
  • Two firms merged under one name, or one firm split in two: tell us which permits belong to whom.

Write to corrections at contractorrecords dot com with the firm name, the city and what's wrong. We check the source and fix it. We don't take money to change a page.
