Syracuse, NY building permit statistics

Data through October 2024 · updated 19 Oct 2026

1,980 building permits issued in Syracuse, January 2023 through October 2024: about 1,080 a year. The biggest kind of work is remodels & repairs, with 591. 63% were permits for homes. The busiest month for permits is May.

What this file covers: The file stopped carrying electrical, HVAC, sprinkler and demolition permits in 2021 and 2022, so it holds the city's building, sign, fire alarm and elevator permits but not its trade permits. It has had almost no new rows since early 2025.

How Syracuse compares with other cities

From our cross-city data studies: the same measure, read the same way, for every city we cover.

How these numbers are made

Source: Syracuse Open Data, Permit Requests, read 19 Oct 2026. We count permits issued January 2023 through October 2024; denied and withdrawn permits are left out. The city's public file has an issue date but no permit status and no final inspection date, so no finished share is shown.

Building-type permits in the City of Syracuse's open-data Permit Requests file: remodels and changes of occupancy, deck, fence, ramp, porch and roof work, new homes and buildings, signs, fire alarms, elevators, pools and antennas, inside city limits. Right-of-way and event permits in the same file are not counted. Since 2022 the file holds no electrical, HVAC, plumbing, sprinkler or demolition permits. DeWitt, Salina, Geddes and the rest of Onondaga County run their own permit offices and are not in this file.

  • The city's file names no contractor and has no job value, permit status or final inspection date, so we show none of those.
  • The file has had only a handful of rows since February 2025 and electrical, HVAC, sprinkler and demolition permits left it in 2021 and 2022, so the window runs from January 2023, the first month with the file's current mix of permits, to October 2024, before the counts fall away.
  • Deck, fence, ramp, porch and roof jobs share one permit type, Misc.; we sort them into fences, roofing and the other kinds of work by the permit's description.
  • Roof-cover replacement permits all but stop appearing in the file after July 2023 (195 in the window, 16 of them in the last 12 months on file); the file doesn't say whether the city stopped requiring them or stopped publishing them, so the roofing count is not a trend.
  • The ZIP code and whether a property is a home come from matching the permit's address to the city's 2025 parcel map; about one permit in twenty doesn't match and has no ZIP code.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
