When each kind of work is filed

Permits by calendar month, 100 = an average month (the thin line), August 2024 through July 2026. Kinds of work do not all peak together. Each month is counted twice (once a year), so one unusual month still moves these numbers.

How many permits get finished

Permits issued Aug 2024–Jul 2025, so each has had at least 12 months to reach a final. Finished means the county recorded a final inspection or marked it complete. The file doesn't mark permits expired, so a lapsed permit still reads open.

How these numbers are made

Source: Benton County Building Permits (ArcGIS Online: Building_Permits_Assessor_VIew), read 21 Oct 2026. We count permits issued August 2024 through July 2026; denied and withdrawn permits are left out.

Building permits the Benton County Building Department issues for unincorporated land only: Finley, Plymouth, Paterson, Whitstran and the rural areas around Kennewick, Prosser, Benton City and West Richland. Kennewick, Richland, West Richland, Prosser and Benton City issue their own permits and are not in this file; a Kennewick or Prosser mailing address here belongs to land outside those cities. Electrical permits are issued by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, not the county, so there are none in this file.

  • The county's file names a contractor on about three in four recent permits; most of the rest are owner-builders. Older permits name one far less often.
  • The value is the job valuation the county records for its permit fee.
  • The window ends in July 2026: most permits applied for since then had no issue date yet when the file was pulled.
  • A completion date is filled on too few permits to time them, so we show which permits the county marks complete or closed but not how long they took.
  • Recent permits carry no parcel number, so the file can't be placed by ZIP code.
  • The county files its permits under short codes; SOB (small mechanical, plumbing and other jobs) and DRA (home remodels and additions) are split into kinds of work by their descriptions, and SFD and FAS (manufactured homes) count as new homes.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
