How to check a contractor's license in Montana

Montana does not license general contractors by exam. It requires every construction contractor with employees to hold a Construction Contractor Registration (CR) with the Department of Labor & Industry, checkable in the department's registration search; electricians and plumbers hold state licenses from the Electrical Board and Board of Plumbers. We publish permit data for three Montana cities; Missoula issued 2,420 HVAC and 2,044 electrical permits from October 2024 through September 2026.

Montana law defines a construction contractor as anyone who adds to or takes away from a structure, project, development or improvement attached to real estate (39-9-102, MCA), per the department's registration page. The registration exists to make sure contractors comply with the Workers' Compensation Act; it says nothing about skill. The department also notes that hiring a registered contractor protects you from liability for the contractor's unemployment insurance coverage.

How to look a contractor up, step by step

  1. Ask whether the firm has employees. If yes, it needs a CR; a one-person outfit may instead hold an ICEC.
  2. Search the registration search by business name, city or registration number. "Results will only show those that are currently active"; a firm that does not appear is unregistered, expired or pending. Separate links on the same page list suspended registrations and revoked exemption certificates. You can also call (406) 444-7734.
  3. For electrical or plumbing work, look up the license through the Business Standards Division's Lookup Licensed Individual page, which links its Licensee Lookup System. Our fetcher could not open the lookup itself.
  4. Look up the address's permits: Bozeman, Missoula or Billings.

Penalties

Contractors "can be fined up to $500 per violation" for working without a required registration, working with a suspended one, or transferring it to someone else (DLI). We found no homeowner recovery fund on the department's pages.

Red flags on a Montana job

  • A crew with employees and no active CR in the search.
  • A firm that appears only on the suspended list.
  • A "registered" contractor offered as proof of skill; registration is about workers' compensation.
  • An electrician or plumber who cannot give a state license number.

How we know this

Registration rules, the fee and penalties are quoted from the Montana Department of Labor & Industry's Construction Contractor Registration page and its registration search, and the board names from the Electrical Board and Board of Plumbers pages, read 25 October 2026. The licensee lookup portal could not be read by our fetcher. Counts come from each city's public permit file, read 19 October 2026; we have not matched Montana contractor names to registration or license records.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • Does Montana have a contractor license?

Not a trade license for builders. Montana requires Construction Contractor Registration (CR) with the Department of Labor & Industry; "All construction contractors with employees must register." Electricians and plumbers hold state licenses from their boards.

  • What does Montana contractor registration prove?

That the contractor has registered with the Department of Labor & Industry, which uses registration to make sure contractors comply with the Workers' Compensation Act. It is not a skills exam.

  • How do I look up a Montana contractor's registration?

In the Department of Labor & Industry's Contractor Registration search, by business name, city or registration number. Results show only registrations that are currently active, and separate lists show suspended registrations.

  • What is the penalty for working without registration in Montana?

Contractors "can be fined up to $500 per violation" for working without a required registration, working with a suspended one, or transferring it to another person.

  • What is an Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate?

A certificate (ICEC) for a sole worker without employees, searchable in the same tool by certificate number, business name, last name or city. It is about workers' compensation status, not skill.
