Ames contractor license lookup: Iowa registration, electrical and PMSB licenses, and the City permits

An Ames contractor check is three state searches: the contractor registration every builder needs, the electrical license, and the Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board (PMSB) license for plumbing and HVAC. The City of Ames issues permits and will not issue them to a contractor without the state credential. In our Ames file, 448 firms pulled 5,518 residential permits from October 2023 to September 2026, 1,733 of them for HVAC.

The City's Contractor Registration page: "All contractors performing construction work in Ames must be registered with the Iowa Division of Labor", and "Without the appropriate licensing as issued by the State of Iowa, contractors will not be allowed to secure permits or work within the City of Ames" (read 23 October 2026). Registration is now handled by DIAL: Iowa requires contractors to register "if they earn at least $2,000 a year from construction"; the fee is $50, and a first violation can bring "a $500 citation" and a repeat "up to $5,000" (DIAL).

Registration is not a skills test. The PMSB license is: a plumbing or HVAC contractor needs a "Master of record", an individual "possessing an active master license", a public liability policy of "$500,000" and a surety bond of "$5,000" (PMSB Contractor License).

How to run the lookup in five minutes

  1. Ask for the Iowa contractor registration number, and the electrical or PMSB license number for trade work.
  2. Registration: DIAL's records page lists "Contractor Registration licenses" among its searches. Its link to the Iowa Workforce Development labor portal did not load for us on 23 October 2026; if it fails for you, call DIAL Contractor Registration on 515-242-5871 (DIAL contacts).
  3. Electrician: search the electrical license search by name or number.
  4. Plumber or HVAC: search the Iowa Regulatory Licensing portal, or call PMSB contractor licensing on 515-281-6071.
  5. Track record: open the firm on our Ames HVAC list, plumber list or remodeler list.

How to search Ames permit records

Ames runs permits through its EnerGov SelfService portal (read 23 October 2026). Search it by address and check that the contractor on each past permit matches the one quoting you. A contractor that cannot pull a permit in Ames, because it lacks the state credential, may suggest you pull a homeowner permit instead; that is the moment to run the searches above.

The portal is organised by permit. Ours is organised by firm, on the Ames permit statistics page and the compare lists.

Red flags in Ames

  • No Iowa contractor registration, or a firm that asks you to pull the permit because it "can't".
  • A plumber or HVAC firm with no PMSB license, or one that cannot name its master of record.
  • An electrician who is not on the state electrical search.
  • Registration offered as proof of skill. It has no exam.
  • A firm that has gone quiet: 3 water heater firms and 3 porch and deck builders with 5+ permits filed none in the last 12 months of our data.

What this lookup does not tell you

Iowa publishes no bulk contractor-registration or license file, so our Ames pages show no license status; a blank there says nothing about the firm. Ames records a job value only on building permits, so HVAC, water heater, plumbing and electrical permits show no typical cost. Almost every older permit passes final inspection, so completion rates cannot tell firms apart and are not shown. Ames issues no re-roof permits, so there is no roofing list. Our data stops at September 2026. Penalties, the out-of-state bond and exemptions are in How to check a contractor's registration in Iowa.

How we know this

Permits are City of Ames residential permits (one record per permit), 2023-10 to 2026-09, grouped into the trades above. Days run from issue to final. No license status or completion rate is shown. Rules are quoted from City of Ames and Iowa DIAL pages, read 23 October 2026.

Numbers come from City of Ames residential permits (one record per permit), data through October 16, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • Does Ames license contractors?

No, the State does. The City of Ames says all contractors performing construction work in Ames must be registered with the State, and that without the appropriate state licensing they 'will not be allowed to secure permits' or work in the City.

  • Who has to register as a contractor in Iowa?

Anyone who earns at least $2,000 a year from construction, with a $50 application fee. People earning less, or working only on their own property, are exempt. Registration has no exam.

  • How do I check an Ames electrician?

On the state electrical license search at dps-eeb.my.site.com/LicenseSearchPage, which DIAL lists for electrical licenses from apprentice to master and electrical contractor.

  • How do I check an Ames plumber or HVAC contractor?

On the Iowa Regulatory Licensing public search (amanda-portal.idph.state.ia.us), which DIAL lists for the Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board. A PMSB contractor must have a master of record, $500,000 of liability insurance and a $5,000 bond.

  • How fast do Ames permits close?

Fast for swaps: the usual water heater permit in our data closed in 2 days and the usual HVAC permit in 7. Plumbing and electrical take longer (94 and 93 days) because new-home rough-ins are included.
