Which license a Nashville plumber needs

Metro Codes' Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical Examiners & Appeals Board examines and issues master, journeyman and apprentice plumber's certificates (Metro Codes, read 22 October 2026). The master's certificate is what the trade permit is pulled under, so the name to ask for is the master plumber's, not only the company's.

Tennessee adds a state license by dollar amount: plumbing subcontractors need their own license (CMC-A) when their part is "$25,000 or more", and in Davidson County residential jobs from $3,000 to $24,999 need a home improvement license (Board for Licensing Contractors, read 22 October 2026). Most plumbing jobs stay under $25,000 (the middle half of Nashville plumbers file between $5,000 and $25,000); a whole-house repipe or a new-build rough-in may not.

The five-minute check: search the business or license number on verify.tn.gov and read the status and monetary limit, then call Metro Codes on 615-862-6500 to confirm the master plumber's certificate. The full table of Nashville licenses is in the Nashville contractor license lookup.

The permit rule for plumbing in Nashville

Plumbing is a Metro trade permit. Metro says "Only licensed contractors with an e-permit account can apply for a trade permit using our online system"; anyone else applies in person, and the examiners board tests homeowners before issuing a homeowner permit (Metro Codes, read 22 October 2026). Which repairs need no permit varies by city; the rules in 13 cities are in do I need a permit for plumbing repairs. After booking, search your address on Metro's Parcel Viewer and open Permit History: the plumbing permit should name your plumber.

Red flags in the Nashville record

  • A finished share under 72.1%. That is the 10th-percentile line among the 214 plumbers with 10 or more Nashville permits; 16 finish under 70%. A plumbing permit without a final means work no Metro inspector has signed off.
  • No master plumber named. 47.5% of plumbing firms had no state license match by name, often because their jobs stay under $25,000. The Metro certificate is then the only license check, so get the name.
  • A firm that went quiet. 43 plumbing firms with 5 or more permits filed none in the last 12 months.
  • A single-permit history. 191 firms (30.3%) filed exactly one plumbing permit in three years; there is little to read.
  • A request that you pull a homeowner permit for work the plumber is doing.

What the Nashville record does not tell you

A final means Metro's inspector passed the work; it does not grade the price or the cleanup. We have no days-to-final figure for Nashville, so ask when the inspection is booked. The license match is by business name to the state file; we do not hold Metro's plumber certificates, so unmatched is not unlicensed. Drain cleaning and fixture repairs that need no permit leave no record. The national checklist is in hiring a plumber, and when a handyman will do in plumber vs handyman.

How we know this

Permits are Metro Nashville Codes plumbing trade permits on homes in Davidson County, 2023-09 to 2026-09. "Reached a final" uses permits a year or more old. Percentile and under-70% figures use plumbing firms with 10 or more permits; the filed-value range uses firms with 3 or more. The busiest-firm table ranks by permits in the last 12 months. License status is our business-name match to the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors' file. Rules are quoted from the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance and Metro Codes pages, read 22 October 2026.

Numbers come from Metro Nashville (Davidson County) building and trade permits, data through September 21, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
