Where to search Nashville permits
| Tool | Search by | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| ePermits | Property address | Building and trade permits, sign-offs, inspection status, property standards cases |
| Parcel Viewer | Address or parcel | Zoning, ownership history and a Permit History list with documents |
| Building permits database (Data.Nashville.gov) | Map, filters | Metro's published building permit records |
| Our Nashville firm list | Contractor name | Every permit a firm pulled in three years, with its finished share |
The older Codes Permit Search on documents.nashville.gov is still linked from Metro's page, but the search itself now says that as of 18 May 2026 "Codes Permits reports will no longer be available via this portal" and points to ePermits (read 23 October 2026).
How to look up permits on a Nashville address
- Open ePermits and type the street address. Accounts are for "Registered licensed contractors" who file permits; the address lookup is the public part.
- Open each permit. Check the type (building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical), the issue date and the contractor named on it.
- Read the sign-offs. A trade permit with a passed final is closed; one with inspections still pending is open.
- For the documents, use the Parcel Viewer: search the address, pick Permit History in the left-hand options, and click a permit number (Property Permit History).
- If the contractor's name is not on the permit for your job, ask whose license it was pulled under.
Reading the result, and what "finished" means here
Metro's trade permits carry inspection sign-offs, and a permit counts as finished on our pages when the record shows a final. Metro's building permits in our copy carry no final date, so for new homes, pools, decks and the other building trades we show counts and values but no finished share (how we count finished; Nashville about page).
| Trade | Permits | Firms | Reached final (permits a year or more old) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical | 50,235 | 1,163 | 89.5% |
| Plumbing | 26,809 | 630 | 89.7% |
| HVAC and gas | 29,714 | 939 | 75.6% |
| New homes | 10,208 | 2,252 | not recorded |
HVAC is the trade where an open permit is most common: 75.6% reached a final, against 89.7% for plumbing. If your furnace or heat pump permit is still open a year later, ask the installer to book the final.
When an old permit is not online
Metro Codes says "Some records are not automatically posted online" and "may be obtained through a Public Records Request" (Public Records and Information). File it on Metro's public records portal with the address and the years you need, or call Codes on 615-862-6500.
What our Nashville data adds
Metro shows one address at a time. We file the same permits under the contractor: open a firm on the electrician, plumber or HVAC list to see how many permits it pulled and what share reached a final. The Nashville permit statistics page has the totals by trade and month. To check the license behind the permit, see the Nashville contractor license lookup; to check whether your job needs a permit at all, see Do I need a permit?

How we know this
Portal steps and quotes are from Metro Codes' Public Records and Information and Property Permit History pages, read 23 October 2026. Permit counts are Metro Nashville Codes building and trade permits on homes, September 2023 to September 2026; "reached final" uses trade permits a year or more old. We did not test the records request turnaround.
Numbers come from Metro Nashville (Davidson County) building and trade permits, data through September 21, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Nashville?
Search the address in Metro's ePermits system, which Metro Codes says finds construction and trade permits for a property address and shows permit sign-offs and inspection status. The Parcel Viewer's Permit History option lists the same property's permits.
- Are Nashville building permits public record?
Yes. Metro Codes publishes them through ePermits, the Parcel Viewer and a building permits database on Data.Nashville.gov, and anything not online can be asked for with a public records request.
- Can I search Nashville permits by contractor name?
Metro's own tools are built around the property address. Our Nashville pages list every permit by the firm that pulled it: 121,932 permits from 7,146 firms between September 2023 and September 2026.
- How many Nashville trade permits reach a final inspection?
In our file, 89.5% of electrical permits a year or more old reached a final, 89.7% of plumbing permits and 75.6% of HVAC permits.
- What if an old Nashville permit is not online?
Metro Codes says some records are not posted online and can be obtained through a public records request, filed on Metro's GovQA portal. Its Codes office is on 615-862-6500.
