Minneapolis building permit search: how to look up permits on an address

To look up an existing permit in Minneapolis, use the City's Property information search: type an address and it returns the property's records, including "Inspection history" and "Licenses and license history" (read 23 October 2026). The City also publishes its construction permits as an open data layer, CCS_Permits, which is where our 74,258 Minneapolis permits from October 2023 to September 2026 come from.

Where Minneapolis permits live

The search is organised by address. It does not offer a search by contractor; for that, our compare pages group every City permit by the firm on it.

One gap to know: the City's permit file has no electrical permits, so an electrician's work will not show in our Minneapolis pages. Plumbing, heating, roofing, windows, remodels and the rest do.

How to look up the permits on a Minneapolis address

  1. Open the Property information search and follow "Search for an address".
  2. Type the house number and street, and pick the property from the list.
  3. Read the inspection history: each permit's inspections and their results are listed against the address.
  4. Note the permit numbers and dates, and check that the contractor matches the firm you hired.
  5. If the history you need is older than the online record, request it from the City (below).

How to read Minneapolis permit statuses

In the City's permit layer each permit ends in one of a few states. We read them like this:

Status in the record What it means Finished in our data?
Closed Work finished and the permit closed, with a completion date Yes
Issued / Open Work allowed, not yet closed Not yet
Expired Lapsed before it was closed No

Every closed permit in the window carries a completion date, so we can time each firm's permits from issue to close. Our completion rate uses permits a year or more old (Minneapolis about page, methodology).

When the permit you want is not online

For anything the search does not show, use the City's Request public data page. Requests go through the online form (registration and login required), by email to responsibleauthority@minneapolismn.gov, on 311 or 612-673-3000, or at City Hall, 350 S. Fifth St., Room 312 (read 23 October 2026).

What our Minneapolis file adds

The City's search answers "what happened at this address". Ours answers "how does this contractor's Minneapolis record compare".

Trade Permits Firms Finished Usual days to final
Plumbing 20,012 497 70.6% 113
Roofing 18,620 1,483 93.0% 85
HVAC & gas 18,180 298 75.6% 85
Windows & doors 5,528 478 81.8% 98
Remodel 5,552 1,424 75.5% 161
Garage 706 185 93.4% 143

5,675 firms pulled the 74,258 permits. "Finished" is the share of permits a year or more old that the City closed.

The Minneapolis permit statistics page has the same file by trade, year and month; the firm lists are on the roofing, plumbing and HVAC compare pages. To check the licence behind a name on a permit, use the Minneapolis contractor license lookup; to check whether your job needs a permit at all, see Do I need a permit?.

What this does not tell you

No electrical permits, and plumbing and HVAC permits rarely record a job value. Utility permits are left out. Our file covers October 2023 to September 2026.

How we know this

Search and records details are quoted from the City of Minneapolis's Property information search and Request public data pages, read 23 October 2026. Statuses are from the City's CCS permit layer, October 2023 to September 2026.

Numbers come from City of Minneapolis construction permits (CCS), data through October 16, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Minneapolis?

Type the address into the City's Property information search. It lists the property's inspection history, which is where each permit's inspections and results appear.

  • Are Minneapolis building permits public record?

Yes. The City publishes them in its property search and as an open data layer, and other permit records can be requested as public data on 311 or 612-673-3000.

  • Why can't I find an electrical permit for my Minneapolis house?

The City's permit file has no electrical permits, so they are not in the property search data we use or on our Minneapolis pages. Ask the electrician for the permit number.

  • Can I search Minneapolis permits by contractor name?

Not in the City's property search, which works by address. Our Minneapolis compare pages list every permit from October 2023 to September 2026 under the firm that pulled it.

  • How long does a Minneapolis permit take to close?

In our file the usual roofing permit closed in 85 days, plumbing in 113 and a remodel in 161.
