13 kinds of work on the San Diego record

What this does

Every trade card above opens a list of every contractor who pulled that kind of permit in the City of San Diego, October 2023 through September 2026: 5,296 firm listings across 13 kinds of work and 42,447 permits in all. Each row shows how many permits the firm filed, how many the city closed out, its usual filed job value and, where the state keeps one, whether its license matches. Names link to the firm's own page with its permits.

The busiest trades on the San Diego record are electrical, plumbing & HVAC (no-plan) (20,942 permits from 1,521 firms), solar (10,027 permits from 423 firms), electrical (2,265 permits from 576 firms). The smallest file is patio cover, garage & accessory structure, with 242 permits from 168 firms, so its lists are short and each firm's record is thin.

Before you call anyone, see what jobs usually cost here, from the values filed on the permits: remodel & alteration cost, ADU (companion unit) cost, addition cost, pool & spa cost, damage repair cost, new home cost, foundation & seismic retrofit cost, patio cover, garage & accessory structure cost.

How the order is set

Nobody at our end ranks anyone. You move five sliders: does exactly this work (how many permits of this kind the firm filed), finishes the job (where the file records it, the share of its permits that passed a final inspection), fits my job & budget (how close its usual job is to yours), busy lately (permits in the last 12 months) and works near me (permits near your ZIP code). Each firm gets a 0–100 fit score from those weights and the list re-sorts as you drag. A short record counts for less, and a license problem puts a firm at the bottom whatever its score. No one can pay to be listed or moved up.

Common questions

  • How do I compare contractors in San Diego?Pick the kind of work above. The next page lists every San Diego firm with that kind of permit on record; set what matters to you (finishing jobs, size of job, recent work, distance) and the list re-orders. Then check the license yourself and ask for references.
  • How current is the San Diego permit data? The file covers October 2023 through September 2026. We read it about once a month, so a permit filed after Sep 2026 isn't here yet.
  • Is a high fit score a quality rating? No. It says how well a firm's public permit record matches what you told the page you value. It knows nothing about workmanship, price quotes or manners: get references and proof of insurance before you sign. How to verify a contractor →
  • How do I check a San Diego contractor's license?Ask for the license number and look it up at CSLB license check. Our lists match licenses by name, which can miss one, so the board's record is the one to trust.
