Where Ames permits live
The portal refuses automated reading, so we could not check its search screens; the City's page names it as the place for permits and inspections. Inspection requests also go to 515-239-5153 or inspections@cityofames.org. The same City page posts monthly building permit reports for 2025 and 2026.
The City does not describe a contractor search. Our compare pages group the City's permits by the contractor named on each.
How to look up the permits on an Ames address
- Open the Citizen Self Service portal.
- Use the portal's search to find the address or permit number.
- Open each permit for its status and inspections.
- Check that the contractor on each permit is the one quoting you or the one a seller named.
- For anything older than the portal holds, file an open records request (below).
How to read Ames permit statuses
In the City's permit data we read these statuses:
| Status in the record | What it means | Finished in our data? |
|---|---|---|
| Complete | Final inspection passed; a final date is recorded | Yes |
| Issued | Work allowed, not yet complete | Not yet |
| Closed W/O Final Inspection | Closed without a final | No |
We do not show a completion rate for Ames: almost every older permit here passes final, so it cannot tell contractors apart. We do time each firm's permits from issue to final (Ames about page, methodology).
When the permit you want is not online
The City Clerk takes open records requests through its online form, and the City says requests may also go to an employee in any office; the City's number is (515) 239-5101 (Open Records Requests, read 23 October 2026).
What our Ames file adds
The portal answers "what was permitted at this address". We answer "how quickly does this firm close its Ames permits".
| Trade | Permits | Firms | Usual days to final |
|---|---|---|---|
| HVAC | 1,733 | 50 | 7 |
| Water heater | 1,578 | 49 | 2 |
| Electrical | 798 | 76 | 93 |
| Plumbing | 786 | 73 | 94 |
| Remodel | 215 | 84 | 97 |
| Deck & porch | 245 | 95 | 91 |
448 firms pulled the 5,518 permits. Swaps close fast: the usual water heater permit reached final in 2 days and HVAC in 7. Plumbing and electrical take longer because new-home rough-ins are included.
The Ames permit statistics page has the same file by trade, year and month; the firm lists are on the HVAC, water heater and remodel compare pages. To check the licence behind a name on a permit, use the Ames contractor license lookup; to check whether your job needs a permit at all, see Do I need a permit?.

What this does not tell you
Ames issues no re-roof permits, so there is no roofing list. Only building permits record a job value. Iowa publishes no bulk contractor file, so licence status is not shown. Our file covers October 2023 to September 2026.
How we know this
Portal and records details are quoted from the City of Ames's Permitting and Inspections and Open Records Requests pages, read 23 October 2026. Statuses are from the City's residential permit data, October 2023 to September 2026.
Numbers come from City of Ames residential permits (one record per permit), data through October 16, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
