How to check a contractor's license in South Dakota

South Dakota licenses its electricians and plumbers at the state level and leaves builders to the cities. In Sioux Falls, every contractor doing residential work that needs a building permit must hold a city license backed by a $20,000 compliance bond and $300,000 of liability insurance; check it on the city's Currently Licensed Contractors list. Sioux Falls issued 24,315 permits from October 2024 through September 2026, including 4,491 electrical and 4,247 HVAC permits.

How to look a contractor up, step by step

  1. Ask for the Sioux Falls license number and, for wiring or plumbing, the state license number.
  2. Find the firm on Currently Licensed Contractors, or call Building Services at 605-367-8672 "to confirm the license is active".
  3. Confirm the electrician with the Electrical Commission (605.773.3573) and the plumber with the Plumbing Commission (605.773.3429).
  4. Ask for proof of general liability insurance.
  5. Look up the address's permits with the Sioux Falls building permit search guide.

The city's Hiring a Contractor page warns against paying in full up front, and against a contractor who asks you to pull the permit, request inspections or sign a completion certificate before the City approves the work.
