Sioux Falls building permit search: the Building Permit Database and older records

To look up permits on a Sioux Falls, South Dakota address, use the City's Building Permit Database, linked from the City's permits page as the Issued Permits Report. It filters by permit type, house number, street name, month and year, shows each permit's date, permit number, address, type, description, contractor and value, and exports to Excel. The page notes that "this list contains permit data for the last five years"; for older permits it links to the City's Customer Self Service portal (read 24 October 2026). In our file, the City issued 24,315 permits from October 2024 to September 2026.

How to look up the permits on a Sioux Falls address

  1. Open the Building Permit Database.
  2. Type the House # and Street Name, leave Permit Type on All Types and the year on All Years, and press Search.
  3. Read each row. Residential Building permits cover new homes, remodels, re-shingling, decks and the electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits for homes, so one job can show several rows.
  4. Check the Contractor column against the company on your contract.
  5. For anything older than five years, or for inspection results, look the property up in Customer Self Service.

What the statuses mean

The database does not show a status, so use Customer Self Service for it. These are the status values in the City's GIS permit file:

Status in the City file How we count it
Finaled Finished, timed to the finalized date
Issued Open
Expired Expired
Cancelled, Withdrawn Left out

Of the permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 89% had finaled, 10% were still open and 1% had expired by our 19 October 2026 snapshot. The usual one took 162 days from issue to final (middle half 62 to 287 days).

When the record is not online

The City's public records page says "Building permit information, plan information, property inspection information and code cases" are available through Customer Self Service. For anything that is not, use the Non-Police: City Public Records Request form and include the property address or parcel number, the date range and the document type. The City says "A majority of public records requests are free"; fees apply after an hour of staff time, and if a request will cost more than $50, staff send an estimate first (read 24 October 2026).

What this does not tell you

The City's GIS file has a contractor column that is empty on every row, so we cannot rank or compare firms; the Building Permit Database is where the contractor name shows. The value is the valuation declared on the permit, not the final cost.

How we know this

Search fields and coverage are from the City of Sioux Falls Building Permit Database page, the portal links from the Building Services page, and the records process from the City's Public Records Request page, all read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's GIS Building Permits layer, read 19 October 2026: permits issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Sioux Falls?

Open the City's Building Permit Database (epldata.siouxfalls.gov/Permits.aspx), type the house number and street name, leave the year on All Years and search. It covers the last five years and shows each permit's date, number, type, description, contractor and value.

  • Can I see who pulled a permit in Sioux Falls?

Yes. The Building Permit Database has a Contractor column on each permit. The City's GIS permit file, which our pages use, has a contractor field that is empty on every row, so we have no firm lists for Sioux Falls.

  • How do I find a Sioux Falls permit older than five years?

The database page links older permits to the City's Customer Self Service portal, and the City's records page says building permit, plan and inspection information is available there. If it is not online, use the City's Non-Police public records request form.

  • How long does a Sioux Falls permit take to final?

The usual permit issued October 2024 to September 2025 took 162 days from issue to the City's finalized date (middle half 62 to 287 days). Garages and sheds took 36 days, roofing 68 and new homes 285.

  • Does Sioux Falls permit Brandon, Harrisburg or Tea addresses?

No. Brandon, Harrisburg, Tea and the unincorporated parts of Minnehaha and Lincoln counties run their own permit offices. The City permits work inside its limits in both counties.
