Do I need an electrical permit in Corpus Christi? The homestead affidavit, service permits and 6,887 permits

Yes: Corpus Christi Development Services issues an electrical permit for wiring work, and a homeowner can do it on a single-family house they own and live in as their homestead by signing the City's Homeowner's Work Affidavit; anyone else needs a licensed electrician. The City issued 6,887 electrical permits from October 2024 to September 2026, a fifth of all its permits.

Who can pull it

The Homeowner's Work Affidavit (DSD-1001, revised 10/2025, read 24 October 2026) quotes City Code Sec. 14-291: a permit may be issued to property owners for work "in a single-family residential building or mobile home owned and occupied by the property owner as their homestead." The owner certifies:

On the affidavit What it means
The applicant "owns and has homestead exemption at this property" A homestead exemption is the test, not just ownership
"This permit allows only the owner who resides here to perform this work" You do it yourself
"If I allow others to perform this work shown on this permit I will be in violation" A hired electrician pulls their own permit
"Plans for the work on my homestead may be required to ensure code compliance" Have a sketch or panel schedule ready

A rental, a duplex or a house that is not your homestead goes to a licensed electrician; check the license on TDLR as How to check a contractor's license in Texas shows.

How to apply

  1. Apply in the Dynamic Portal, the City's "online permit application portal"; Development Services says "first time users will need to apply for an online account" (Development Services, read 24 October 2026).
  2. As a homeowner, attach the signed DSD-1001.
  3. Schedule the inspections on the permit and follow the status in the portal. Questions: Development Services, 361-826-3240.

The pages we read publish no electrical fee, so ask Development Services for the amount.

The service and pool subtypes are the ones a homeowner is most likely to meet: a service upgrade gets its own permit type, and a pool needs an electrical permit apart from its building permit. 98% of electrical permits name a contractor; the Corpus Christi electrical permits page shows which firms filed the most, which is volume, not quality, and includes generator dealers and HVAC companies as well as electricians. The totals are on Corpus Christi permit statistics and the rows on browse Corpus Christi permits.

Before you hire

Look up the permits on the address with the Corpus Christi building permit search guide. Other cities' rules are in do I need a permit for electrical work and an electrical panel upgrade; filed costs elsewhere in electrical work cost.

What this does not tell you

The monthly reports freeze each permit's status in the month it was issued and carry no final date or, on most trade permits, a value, so we show no finished share, timing or cost. We have not matched contractor names to state license records.

How we know this

Homeowner rules are quoted from the City of Corpus Christi's Homeowner's Work Affidavit (DSD-1001, revised 10/2025) and the portal description from its Development Services page, both read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's Fiscal Permit History Reports by Month (Excel), read 19 October 2026: electrical permits issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Questions

  • Can a homeowner do their own electrical work in Corpus Christi?

Yes, in a single-family home or mobile home you own and occupy as your homestead. The City's Homeowner's Work Affidavit (DSD-1001) has you certify that you have a homestead exemption and that only you, the owner who lives there, will do the work.

  • Do I need a permit to upgrade my electrical service in Corpus Christi?

Yes. Development Services files service work as its own residential electrical permit type: 717 of the 6,887 electrical permits issued from October 2024 to September 2026 were residential service permits.

  • Does a pool need an electrical permit in Corpus Christi?

Yes, a separate one. The City files pool wiring as a residential electrical subtype, with 429 residential pool electrical permits from October 2024 to September 2026, alongside the pool's own building permit.

  • Can I hire a handyman to do wiring on my homeowner permit?

No. The affidavit says the permit 'allows only the owner who resides here to perform this work' and that letting others do it is a violation. A hired electrician pulls their own permit.

  • How many electrical permits does Corpus Christi issue?

About 3,444 a year: 6,887 from October 2024 to September 2026, 3,411 of them in the last 12 months, almost the same as the 3,476 the year before.
