Hiring a generator installer: 5 red flags and 8 questions, checked against generator permits in 7 cities

To hire a generator installer, check two licenses, not one: an electrical contractor license for the transfer switch and wiring, and the right gas license for the fuel line, then check that the firm's generator permits reach a final inspection. In Cape Coral, Florida, 84 firms pulled 715 generator permits, 89.9% of those a year or more old reached a final, and the usual one was filed at $14,935. A standby generator back-feeds your house wiring, so a bad install is a safety problem, not just a warranty one.

Which licenses a generator install needs

We hold generator permits for 7 cities in 4 states.

State Electrical (transfer switch, wiring) Fuel line Look it up
Florida DBPR electrical contractor Ask who runs the gas line and for that license MyFloridaLicense
North Carolina NCBEEC electrical contractor Ask for the gas installer's license and check it with the board that issued it NCBEEC, plumbing and heating board
Texas TDLR electrical contractor Propane: a Railroad Commission LP-gas license; Category D covers "install containers" and "piping and certain appliances". Natural gas: ask for the installer's license TDLR, RRC search, TSBPE
Washington L&I electrical contractor license Ask for the gas installer's license L&I Verify

Many generator dealers are electricians who subcontract the gas line, or plumbers who subcontract the wiring. Either is fine. What matters is that each part is done by someone licensed for it, and that each part is on a permit.

Eight questions to ask a generator installer

Ask A good answer How to check it
1. What is your electrical license number? A number in the firm's name The board in the table above
2. Who runs the gas line, and under what license? A named firm and number The gas board in the table above
3. Who pulls the permits? "We do," for electrical and gas The city portal
4. What size, and how did you size it? A load calculation in writing, not a guess Ask for the calculation
5. Automatic or manual transfer switch, and whole house or selected circuits? A clear answer in the contract The contract
6. How many generator permits have you pulled here in three years? A number The firm's page here; search by name
7. How many passed final? Near or above your city's share (table below) Finished share on the firm page
8. Who services it, and is the warranty registered by you? A named service plan, registration done by the installer The manufacturer's warranty lookup

What the generator permit record shows

City Generator permits Firms Usual filed value Usual days to final Reached final Five busiest firms' share Firms gone quiet
Sugar Land, TX 839 135 no value filed 57 64.0% 52.0% 26
Cape Coral, FL 715 84 $14,935 109 89.9% 63.2% 0
Wilmington, NC 644 94 no value filed 35 84.0% 63.0% 8
Bellevue, WA 508 176 no value filed 31 88.1% 39.4% 2
Tyler, TX 437 45 no value filed not recorded 55.4% 77.8% 3
Cary, NC 196 60 $15,000 67 92.0% 56.1% 1
Denton, TX 160 28 $8,200 48 97.6% 77.5% 2

"Firms gone quiet" counts firms with 5 or more generator permits and none in the last 12 months of the window. In Cape Coral the middle half of generator firms usually file between $10,000 and $15,908; in Cary between $5,940 and $15,750.

Five red flags the permit record can show

1. No permit, or one in your name. The FTC lists a contractor asking you to get the permits among its scam signs. A generator that was never inspected is also the one an insurer or a buyer's inspector will ask about.

2. Only one of the two trades is permitted. Search your address on the city portal after the job: you should see the electrical work and, where your city files it separately, the gas work. A job with wiring and no gas permit (or the reverse) means part of it was never inspected.

3. A finished share well below the city's. In Sugar Land, among the 14 generator firms with 10 or more permits, the 10th-percentile firm finished 45.8% and 9 were under 70%. In Cape Coral the 10th-percentile firm finished 79.1% and 0 of 11 were under 70%.

4. A firm that arrived for one season and left. 26 Sugar Land generator firms with 5 or more permits filed none in the last 12 months of the window, more than in any other city here. Generator demand jumps after a long outage and crews follow it. Ask how long the firm has worked locally and who will service the unit in five years. Cape Coral's own warning tells residents to check state licensing, Sunbiz and the city's business tax receipt before hiring (City of Cape Coral, 27 October 2025).

5. The license does not match the firm or has lapsed. 6 Sugar Land and 11 Bellevue generator firms match a license that is no longer active. Check the number from the quote on the board site, not the firm's name.

What a clean record does not prove

A final inspection means the transfer switch, wiring, clearances and gas connection passed when the inspector looked. It does not cover the generator's sizing, the maintenance plan, or whether the warranty was registered. Four of the seven cities file no job value, so this file says little about price outside Cape Coral, Cary and Denton. Our copy updates about monthly; the city portal is the live record. How we know this

Counts and days to final come from each city's generator permits over its window (Cape Coral January 2025 to September 2026; the others October 2023 to September 2026). "Reached final" is the share of permits a year or more old that the city closed with a final. The 10th-percentile and under-70% figures use firms with 10 or more generator permits; the middle-half range uses firms with 3 or more. License status is matched by name to the Florida DBPR, Texas TDLR and Washington L&I files; North Carolina firms are not matched. License rules are quoted from the boards under Sources, read 20 and 21 October 2026.

Numbers come from City of Cape Coral building permits (the city's open permit table starts January 2025); Town of Cary building permit applications (issued permits only); City of Sugar Land building permits on homes (the city's EnerGov permit exports); City of Bellevue permits on single-family homes and condo units; New Hanover County Building Safety permits on homes inside the City of Wilmington (the County issues the City's building permits); City of Tyler TRAKiT building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits on homes, from three city GIS exports of the permit table; City of Denton Building Safety permits on homes (the city's yearly permit reports), data through October 17, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • What license does a generator installer need?

The transfer switch and wiring are electrical work, so an electrical contractor license: DBPR in Florida, NCBEEC in North Carolina, TDLR in Texas, L&I in Washington. The fuel line is separate. In Texas, propane piping and tank work is licensed by the Railroad Commission (Category D covers installing containers and piping); for natural gas, ask who runs the line and check that person's license with the board that issued it.

  • How much does a standby generator cost to install?

The usual filed value of a generator permit was $14,935 in Cape Coral, $15,000 in Cary and $8,200 in Denton. Filed values are what the contractor told the city; they may or may not include the generator itself.

  • How long does a generator permit take to close?

The usual generator permit reached its final in 31 days in Bellevue, 35 in Wilmington, 57 in Sugar Land and 109 in Cape Coral.

  • When should I buy a generator?

Before the season. Generator permits in Cape Coral peak in August and in Sugar Land in August, the middle of hurricane season; in Bellevue they peak in December. Ordering in the quiet months avoids the wait and the storm-chaser crews.
