Hiring a roofer in Cape Coral: the DBPR license, City registration, and what the roofing permits show

To hire a roofer in Cape Coral, check its Florida DBPR roofing license, that it is registered with the City, and that it pulls the re-roof permit itself. The record here is clean: 465 firms pulled 2,018 roofing permits from January 2025 to September 2026, 99.4% of those firms matched an active DBPR license, 98.4% of permits a year or more old reached a final, usually in 39 days, and the usual job was filed at $17,200. The risk in Cape Coral is the roofer who is not in the record at all.

Which license a Cape Coral roofer needs

Roofing is on DBPR's list of categories that require state registration or certification (DBPR FAQ, read 22 October 2026). A Certified license works statewide; a Registered one covers only the county or city that issued the local license, plus places that accept it. On top of that, a state-licensed contractor registers with the City, opening its EnerGov account with "the same exact information of the state license certificate" (City of Cape Coral Contractor Registration FAQ, revised 3 February 2026, read 23 October 2026).

The five-minute check: search the license number on DBPR's Verify a Licensee and read the status. "Current, Active" means the roofer may work; "Delinquent, Active" means it may not until the renewal is processed. Then confirm the firm under "Contractors" on the City's EnerGov self-service site. The Cape Coral contractor license lookup has the rest.

The permit rule for a Cape Coral re-roof

"Re-Roof" is on the City's map of common permits, with a residential guideline (City of Cape Coral, read 22 October 2026). The roofer pulls it. The City's Choosing a Contractor page warns against a contractor who will only work if you pull the permits, because that makes you responsible for the work. Search your address on EnerGov once the job is booked; the permit should name your roofer.

Red flags in Cape Coral, mostly after a storm

  • No license number on the truck, card or contract. The City tells residents to check "that license numbers appear on business cards, ads, vehicles, and contracts".
  • Unlicensed work after a declared emergency. Under F.S. 489.127(2)(c) that is a third-degree felony; otherwise a first offence is a first-degree misdemeanor. Report it to Code Compliance on 239-242-3783 or unlicensed@capecoral.gov.
  • A registered license from another county. It may not cover Lee County.
  • No Cape Coral record. With 245 one-permit firms, many roofers you meet will have nothing here to read. Ask for addresses in Fort Myers or elsewhere in Lee County and look those up.
  • A firm that stopped filing. 11 roofing firms with 5 or more permits filed none in the last 12 months.

What the Cape Coral record does not tell you

The City's open permit table starts in January 2025, so Cape Coral has 21 months of history, and the finished share rests on permits issued in 2025. A firm with a permit history that is all newer than a year has no finished share yet. License status is our match of company and qualifier names to DBPR's files as of our snapshot; check today's status yourself. A final means the City passed the inspections, not that the product approvals and wind-mitigation paperwork your insurer wants were filed. The national checklist is in hiring a roofer; the permit rules across cities in do I need a permit for a roof replacement.

How we know this

Permits are City of Cape Coral roofing permits on residential parcels, 2025-01 to 2026-09. "Reached a final" uses permits a year or more old; days to final is the median from issue to final. The 10th-percentile figure uses roofing firms with 10 or more permits; the filed-value range uses firms with 3 or more. The busiest-firm table ranks by permits in the last 12 months. License status is our match of permit company and qualifier names to DBPR's construction license file. Rules are quoted from DBPR, the Florida Statutes and City of Cape Coral pages, read 22 October 2026.

Numbers come from City of Cape Coral building permits (the city's open permit table starts January 2025), data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
