Hiring an electrician in Nashville: the master's certificate, the state license, and what 50,000 electrical permits show

To hire an electrician in Nashville, find out whose Metro master electrician's certificate the permit goes under, check the Tennessee license when the job crosses $25,000, and read the firm's Nashville permit record. 1,163 firms pulled 50,235 electrical permits in Davidson County from September 2023 to September 2026; 89.5% of those a year or more old reached a final, and the usual one was filed at $5,000. Most firms finish well: the trouble is concentrated in a minority you can spot on the record.

Which license a Nashville electrician needs

Two layers. Metro Codes' Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical Examiners & Appeals Board examines and issues the master electrician's certificate, plus equipment installer and low-voltage wiring installer licenses (Metro Codes, read 22 October 2026). That certificate is what the trade permit runs on, so it is the first thing to ask for.

The State comes in by dollar amount. Tennessee's Board for Licensing Contractors requires electrical subcontractors to hold their own license when their part is "$25,000 or more" (classification CE), and Davidson County is one of nine counties where residential jobs from $3,000 to $24,999 need a home improvement license (Board for Licensing Contractors, read 22 October 2026). A panel upgrade usually sits in that middle band; the middle half of Nashville electrical firms file between $3,000 and $20,000.

The five-minute check: search the license number or business name on verify.tn.gov and read the status and monetary limit, then call Metro Codes on 615-862-6500 to confirm the master's certificate named on your quote is current; we found no public online search for Metro's certificates. The permit rule for electrical work in Nashville

Electrical work goes through Metro Codes as a trade permit. Metro's trades page says "Only licensed contractors with an e-permit account can apply for a trade permit using our online system"; everyone else applies in person, and the examiners board also tests homeowners who want a homeowner permit (Metro Codes, read 22 October 2026). Once the job is booked, open Metro's Parcel Viewer, search your address and choose Permit History: the electrical permit should be there with your electrician's name on it. Panel rules in other cities are in do I need a permit for an electrical panel upgrade.

Red flags in the Nashville record

  • A finished share under 71.4%. That is the 10th-percentile line among the 445 Nashville electricians with 10 or more permits; 40 of them finish under 70%. Ask about open permits by address.
  • No master's name on the quote. 42.0% of electrical firms had no state license match by name, many because their jobs are under $25,000. Without a certificate holder's name there is nothing to check.
  • A $25,000+ job with no state license. A service upgrade with a generator or a whole-house rewire can cross the line; the monetary limit on the state record must cover your contract.
  • A firm that stopped filing. 93 electrical firms with 5 or more permits filed none in the last 12 months.
  • "You pull the permit." A homeowner permit names you, not the firm, and the job then appears in no electrician's record.

The busiest Nashville electricians in the last 12 months

Ranked by Nashville electrical permits in the last 12 months of the window. Volume, not quality; some busy firms are plumbing-and-HVAC companies with an electrical arm, and some do mostly small service calls.

Strada Services LLC 659 2,295
Romanoff Electric Residential LLC 657 2,291
Morgan Electric Co Inc 632 1,674

Music City Handymen LLC 313 1,155

The five busiest firms hold only 16.5% of the city's electrical permits, and 482 firms filed 10 or more, so you have plenty of records to compare. The compare list shows each firm's finished share and license match next to its volume.

What the Nashville record does not tell you

A final means Metro's inspector passed the work against code; it says nothing about the price, the cleanup or the warranty. Our file has no days-to-final figure for Nashville, so ask the electrician when the final inspection will be booked. We match firms to the state license file by business name; we do not hold Metro's master certificates or the home improvement license file, so unmatched is not unlicensed. Insurance never appears on a permit. The national checklist is in hiring an electrician, and statewide rules in how to check a contractor's license in Tennessee.

How we know this

Permits are Metro Nashville Codes electrical trade permits on homes in Davidson County, 2023-09 to 2026-09. "Reached a final" uses permits a year or more old. Percentile and under-70% figures use electrical firms with 10 or more permits; the filed-value range uses firms with 3 or more. The busiest-firm table ranks by permits in the last 12 months. License status is our business-name match to the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors' file. Rules are quoted from the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance and Metro Codes pages, read 22 October 2026.

Numbers come from Metro Nashville (Davidson County) building and trade permits, data through September 21, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions
