Which license a Cary HVAC contractor needs

North Carolina licenses HVAC work through the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating & Fire Sprinkler Contractors. Its consumer page says the license is needed by "Anyone who contracts to install, alter or restore plumbing, heating (includes air conditioning) or fire sprinkler systems", and that "Minor repairs and service work to plumbing and heating systems do not require a state license" (read 23 October 2026). A replacement is not a minor repair.

The Town asks for the numbers too: its permit FAQ tells applicants to "include all of your contractors' names, addresses and state license numbers". The five-minute check: get the heating license number from the quote, search it on the board's Verify License Search, and check the status and that the company matches. The permit rule for HVAC work in Cary

The Town lists "Heating and cooling systems and/or components" among residential work that needs a permit, and state law requires one for "The installation, extension, alteration, or general repair of any heating or cooling equipment system" (G.S. 160D-1110, read 23 October 2026). The contractor pulls it. An owner may do their own mechanical work, but the Town says state law requires the house to be the owner's primary residence for at least 12 months after; that exemption is not for a job a contractor does. Red flags in the Cary record

  • A finaled share under 51.6%. That is the 10th-percentile line among the 107 Cary HVAC firms with 10 or more permits; 21 final under 70%, some of them busy firms. Ask who books the final and get the result in writing.
  • No state license number to give you. The Town asks for it on the application.
  • One permit and gone. 112 HVAC firms (30.1%) filed exactly one Cary permit in three years.
  • A firm that stopped filing. 11 firms with 5 or more permits filed none in the last 12 months.
  • A price far outside $7,900 to $11,693 with no reason given (ductwork, a second system, a fuel change).

What the Cary record does not tell you

"Finaled" means the Town's inspection passed or occupancy was granted; an expired permit counts against a firm, and a low share can also mean the firm stopped booking finals rather than bad work. We have not matched permits to the board's license file, so our pages show no license status. Company names on Cary permits are cut at 30 characters. The national checklist is in hiring an HVAC contractor, and state rules in how to check a contractor's license in North Carolina.

How we know this

Permits are Town of Cary residential HVAC permits, 2023-10 to 2026-09; never-issued applications are left out. "Finaled" uses permits a year or more old; days to final is the median from issue to completion. Percentile and under-70% figures use HVAC firms with 10 or more permits; the filed-value range uses firms with 3 or more. The busiest-firm table ranks by permits in the last 12 months. No license status is shown. Board, statute and Town text is quoted from their own pages, read 23 October 2026.

Numbers come from Town of Cary building permit applications (issued permits only), data through October 16, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
