Which license a Colorado Springs HVAC contractor needs

PPRBD licenses mechanical contractors in four classes, H-A (commercial) to H-D (manufactured homes), and its class wording adds that "Employees of the contractor shall also be licensed to install, replace, service and repair these systems and equipment" (License/Registration Types, read 23 October 2026). Every PPRBD license category carries general liability of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate (Insurance Requirements).

The five-minute check: get the firm's PPRBD license number, search it on the Contractor and Mechanic Search, and confirm the status is Active. Ask who will do the install and search that person's name too, since installers are licensed individually. A heat pump or new AC circuit also needs a licensed electrician registered with PPRBD. The permit rule for HVAC work in Colorado Springs

PPRBD's homeowner permit page lists "Construction, installation and replacement of" an "Air conditioning system", "Boiler" and "Furnace" among the projects that require a permit. The contractor pulls it: the same page limits owner permits to work you do yourself and says "It is illegal for a homeowner to obtain a permit for a contractor hired to do the work for you" (read 23 October 2026). Search your address on PPRBD's Permit Search once the job is booked; the mechanical permit should name your contractor. Other cities: do I need a permit for HVAC replacement.

Red flags in the Colorado Springs record

  • A firm that stopped filing. 23 HVAC firms with 5 or more permits filed none in the last 12 months. Ask who honours the labour warranty.
  • One permit and gone. 69 firms (16.4%) filed a single HVAC permit in three years.
  • An installer with no PPRBD license. PPRBD requires the contractor's employees to be licensed too.
  • A replacement quoted with no permit. Furnaces and AC are on PPRBD's permit list.
  • "Pull it as homeowner." PPRBD calls that illegal when a contractor does the work.

What the Colorado Springs record does not tell you

PPRBD's file records a permit's status but not the date it passed final, so days to final are our estimate and we show no finished share. We have not matched permits to PPRBD's license file, so our pages show no license status. A permit does not record the equipment brand or efficiency rating. The national checklist is in hiring an HVAC contractor; the heat pump question is in heat pump vs furnace.

How we know this

Permits are PPRBD mechanical permits on homes filed under the Colorado Springs jurisdiction, 2023-10 to 2026-09; owner-pulled permits are left out. Days to final are estimated from permit status and age. The filed-value range uses firms with 3 or more permits. The busiest-firm table ranks by permits in the last 12 months. No license status is shown. PPRBD rules are quoted from its own pages, read 23 October 2026.
