Tacoma building permit search: Tacoma Permits, statuses and records requests

To look up a permit in the City of Tacoma, use Tacoma Permits, the City's Accela system; its Submit/Search Permits link opens Accela Citizen Access. The City's Tacoma Permits FAQ says: "No, you do not need an account to look up a permit"; an account is needed only to apply (read 24 October 2026). In our file the City issued 6,026 residential building permits from October 2024 to September 2026.

Which addresses and permits this covers

The City of Tacoma Planning and Development Services permits work inside Tacoma. Unincorporated Pierce County, Lakewood, University Place, Fife, Puyallup and the other nearby cities run their own permit offices. Electrical permits in Tacoma come from Tacoma Power, not from this system's building permit file.

How to look up the permits on a Tacoma address

  1. Open TacomaPermits.org and choose Submit/Search Permits. No login is needed to search.
  2. Search the property, or enter the permit ID from your paperwork. The City says the ID "can be used to track your permit" and shows its statuses and comments.
  3. Open each permit. A furnace or heat pump, a water heater and an alteration are separate permits.
  4. Read the current status (table below).
  5. For questions about a permit, email permitplandesk@cityoftacoma.org; the permit counter is on the third floor of the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market Street.

The Accela site did not load for our automated reader, so we cannot list its search fields; open it in a browser.

What the statuses mean

Status in the City file What it means How we count it
Finaled, Final Inspection, Closed, Closed - No Inspect Required Work passed final or file closed Finished
C of O Issued, Cert of Completion Issued Certificate issued Finished
Permit Issued, Active Issued, not yet final Open
Expired Lapsed Expired
Cancelled, Voided, Withdrawn, Denied Never went ahead Left out

Of the residential permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 72.3% had finished and 27.7% were still open by our 19 October 2026 snapshot; only 2 showed Expired. The City's file has a status but no final date, so we can say whether a permit finished, not how long it took.

When the record is not online

The City's Public Records Office says "For the most reliable and efficient processing, please submit a request by using the City of Tacoma's Public Records Request Center" (tacoma.mycusthelp.com). You can also email publicdisclosure@tacoma.gov, call (253) 231-0240 on weekdays, or write to the Public Disclosure Officer, PO Box 11007, Tacoma, WA 98411 (read 24 October 2026). Requests fall under the Washington Public Records Act.

What our Tacoma pages add

The Tacoma page adds the City's residential permits up, October 2024 to September 2026:

Kind of work Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) Last 12 months (Oct 2025–Sep 2026) 12 months before
HVAC 2,784 1,452 1,332
Remodels and repairs 1,223 666 557
Plumbing 931 500 431
New homes 269 151 118
ADUs 178 110 68
Additions 155 89 66
Demolition 150 82 68
Solar 127 34 93

ADU permits rose 62% from the first year of the window to the second, while solar fell 63%. ZIP code 98407 had the most permits, 949 of 6,026, October 2024 to September 2026. The permit statistics page has year and month counts, permits by ZIP code splits them by area and browse permits lists the rows. To check a contractor's registration with Labor & Industries, see How to check a contractor's license in Washington.

What this does not tell you

The City's file names an applicant, not the contractor, so there are no firm lists. Commercial permits, site development, utility connections, right-of-way and sign permits are left out, and electrical work is with Tacoma Power. The value is the valuation on the permit; trade permits often carry none.

How we know this

The no-account rule is quoted from the City of Tacoma's Tacoma Permits FAQ, the portal link from TacomaPermits.org, and the records process from the City's Public Records Office page, all read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's Accela Permit Data layer, read 19 October 2026: residential building permits issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Tacoma?

Open TacomaPermits.org and choose Submit/Search Permits, which opens the City's Accela Citizen Access site. The City's FAQ says you do not need an account to look up a permit. Search the property and open each permit on it.

  • Where are Tacoma electrical permits?

Electrical work in Tacoma is permitted and inspected by Tacoma Power, not in the City's building permit file. Our 6,026 Tacoma permits from October 2024 to September 2026 have no electrical permits for that reason.

  • What does Permit Issued mean on an old Tacoma permit?

The permit was issued and never marked final. The City rarely marks a permit expired, so a lapsed one usually still shows Permit Issued. Of residential permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 27.7% were still open by our 19 October 2026 snapshot.

  • How do I request old Tacoma permit records?

Submit a request through the City of Tacoma's Public Records Request Center, which the Public Records Office says is the most reliable way, or email publicdisclosure@tacoma.gov or call (253) 231-0240.

  • Can I look up Tacoma permits by contractor?

The City's published permit file has an applicant, often the owner or a permit service, but no contractor of record, so we do not list firms for Tacoma. The per-permit page in Tacoma Permits is the place to check who is on a permit.
