Tyler, TX contractor license lookup: TDLR, the plumbing board, City registration and the permits

A Tyler contractor check is two state searches and the City's permit file. TDLR licenses electricians and air-conditioning contractors, the State Board of Plumbing Examiners licenses plumbers, and Texas licenses no roofers or builders, though roofing is Tyler's second-busiest trade. In our Tyler file, 1,541 firms pulled 13,268 permits on homes from October 2023 to September 2026, 2,980 of them for roofs.

TDLR's list of regulated programs includes "Electricians" and "Air Conditioning and Refrigeration"; roofers, home builders and general contractors do not appear on it (TDLR, read 22 October 2026). Plumbers are on the State Board of Plumbing Examiners' licensee list, where "Activities allowed by a specific license/registration type shall not be performed with an expired license/registration."

On the City side, Tyler's Development & Planning FAQs tell contractors not yet registered to submit the Master Registration Form with "A copy of your license(s)" and "A certificate of insurance", and tell each separate trade contractor "You must have your own permit", linked to the general contractor's. The usual Tyler new-home permit carries $269,900 and the usual pool $115,000; for those builders, the City file is the whole record.

How to run the lookup in five minutes

  1. Electrician or AC contractor: search TDLR's License Search by number or business name. Active licenses only; "If license not found, please contact Customer Service at 800-803-9202."
  2. Plumber: search the plumbing board's public search for the responsible master plumber.
  3. Discipline: search TDLR's Complaints and Enforcement sanctions database for the company and the licensee.
  4. City registration and permits: on the City's eTRAKiT, use "Search Contractors" and "Search Permit".
  5. Track record: open the firm on our Tyler roofer list, electrician list or HVAC list.

How to search Tyler permit records

The City's eTRAKiT portal holds building, electrical and plumbing permits, with "Search Permit" and "View on Map" under Permits and "Search Contractors" under Contractor (read 22 October 2026). Permit holders check details by logging in, opening the permit and looking "under the Permit Info tab", per the City's FAQ. City Hall's main line is (903) 531-1100.

eTRAKiT is organised by record. Ours is organised by firm: each firm's Tyler permits, its TDLR match and the share finaled, on the Tyler permit statistics page and the compare lists.

What 13,268 Tyler permits show

Trade Permits Firms Finaled Firms with 5+ permits, none in the last 12 months
Roofing 2,980 218 22.9% 29
Electrical 2,467 235 46.3% 17
HVAC 1,778 144 51.1% 6
Plumbing 1,606 129 71.4% 2
New home 958 199 79.2% 8
Gas line 774 87 86.0% 2
Driveway 774 89 91.1% 7

"Finaled" is the share of permits a year or more old the City finaled, adjusted for permit age. Roofing permits are finaled only about a quarter of the time at any age, so a roofer's rate mostly shows whether they request the final inspection. Electrical sits at 46.3%, and 17 electrical firms matched a TDLR license that is no longer active. Among the 54 electrical firms with 10 or more permits, the 10th-percentile firm finaled 27.6% and the 90th 65.2%.

Red flags in Tyler

  • An electrician or AC contractor not on TDLR's active list, or matched to a license that is no longer active: 17 electrical and 13 solar firms in our file.
  • A trade sub working under the general contractor's permit. The City says each separate contractor needs its own.
  • A plumber who cannot name the responsible master plumber.
  • A roofer with no recent Tyler permits: 29 roofers with 5+ permits filed none in the last 12 months of our data.

What this lookup does not tell you

Our license status is a name match against TDLR's file of air-conditioning and electrical contractors only, so plumbers, irrigators, roofers, pool builders and general contractors show no license even when they hold one from another Texas board, and 19.6% of electrical firms did not match at all. Tyler records no completion date, and the status of 2018–2022 permits is frozen at an old export. Job values are $0 on most electrical, plumbing and gas permits. Our data stops at September 2026. Statewide rules and TDLR penalties are in How to check a contractor's license in Texas.

How we know this

Permits are City of Tyler TRAKiT building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits on homes, from three City GIS exports of the permit table, 2023-10 to 2026-09, grouped into the trades above. "Finaled" uses permits a year or more old, adjusted for age. License status is our name match against the Texas TDLR public license file (air-conditioning and electrical contractors only). Rules are quoted from TDLR, the plumbing board and City of Tyler pages, read 22 October 2026.

Numbers come from City of Tyler TRAKiT building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits on homes, from three city GIS exports of the permit table, data through October 9, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • Does Texas license roofers and general contractors in Tyler?

No. TDLR licenses electricians and air conditioning contractors and the State Board of Plumbing Examiners licenses plumbers, but Texas has no license for roofers, builders or general contractors. For those, Tyler's permit record and the City's contractor registration are what you can check.

  • Where do I check a Tyler electrician or AC contractor?

On TDLR's License Search (tdlr.texas.gov/LicenseSearch). It holds active licenses only; if a license is not found, call TDLR on 800-803-9202, and check TDLR's Complaints and Enforcement database for sanctions.

  • Does a contractor have to register with the City of Tyler?

Tyler asks contractors who are not yet registered to submit its Master Registration Form with a copy of their licenses and a certificate of insurance. Each separate trade contractor must have its own permit, linked to the general contractor's.

  • How do I look up permits on a Tyler address?

On the City's eTRAKiT portal (trakit.cityoftyler.net/eTRAKiT), which has 'Search Permit' and 'Search Contractors' options. City Hall's main line is (903) 531-1100.

  • Why are so many Tyler roofing permits still open?

In our file only 22.9% of roofing permits a year or more old were finaled, the lowest of any Tyler trade. A roofing permit usually closes only when someone requests the final inspection, so ask your roofer to book it and confirm the permit shows finaled before the last payment.
