Do I need an electrical permit in Tyler, TX? Yes: the fee lines, the TDLR license, and why half stay open

Yes: Tyler requires an electrical permit for wiring work on a house, filed in eTRAKiT by a TDLR-licensed electrical contractor registered with the City, and priced per circuit and fixture. Electricians filed 2,467 electrical permits on Tyler homes from October 2023 to September 2026, but only 46.3% of those a year or more old were ever finaled.

What it costs

Tyler's Schedule of Fees (read 23 October 2026) prices electrical permits by item:

Item Fee
Circuits $4.00 for the first 3, $1.75 each additional
Switches, base plugs and fixtures (counted together) $4.00 for the first 5, $0.35 each additional
Dryer, range, electric water heater, heating unit $3.50 each
Motor, 1/2 to 5 HP / over 5 HP $3.50 / $12.00
Smoke detector $3.50 each
Swimming pool (electrical permit) $50.00
Temporary service $50.00
Sign $30.00

The item fees are small: ten new circuits come to $4.00 + 7 × $1.75 = $16.25 before fixtures. Unlike the plumbing and mechanical sections, the electrical section prints no $50 minimum, and the page says its October 2024 changes do not apply to plumbing and electrical permits. Building Services ((903) 531-1151) confirms what a given job totals.

Who files it

Texas licenses electrical contractors and electricians through TDLR, which lists "Electricians" among its programs; check the firm on TDLR's License Search. The City adds registration: its FAQ asks contractors not yet registered for the Master Registration Form, "A copy of your license(s)" and a certificate of insurance. On a remodel, each trade files separately: "You must have your own permit. Once approved, it will be linked to the general contractor's permit."

We found no City page on whether a homeowner may pull an electrical permit on their own house. Ask Building Services before you plan to do your own wiring.

How to apply and close it

  1. Apply in eTRAKiT. Contractors get a profile from staff; homeowners "Create a public registration" (eTRAKiT and ProjectDox).
  2. Request inspections in eTRAKiT with Request Inspection. "Each trade must schedule its own inspections"; requests in before 7 a.m. that meet all requirements usually happen the same day (FAQ).
  3. Read failed results under the permit's Inspections tab, More Info; correction notes are in Notes.
  4. Ask for the final. On a remodel, the Permit Info tab shows the linked trade permits, so you can see whether the electrical one closed.

What 2,467 Tyler electrical permits show

Measure Tyler electrical
Permits on homes, October 2023 to September 2026 2,467
Firms 235
Firms with a permit in the last 12 months 127
Firms matched to an active TDLR license 73.2%
Firms matched to a TDLR record that is not active 17 (7.2%)
Finaled (permits a year or more old) 46.3%
Estimated usual days to final 46
10th / 90th-percentile firm (10+ permits) 27.6% / 65.2%
Busy firms under 70% finaled 50 of 54
Busiest / quietest month June (index 135) / December (76)

Open permits are the norm here, not a sign of one bad firm: 50 of the 54 electricians with 10 or more permits finaled under 70%, and even the 90th-percentile firm finaled 65.2%. So an electrician who does book finals stands out, and asking for the final inspection result before the last payment costs you nothing. The license check matters too: 17 electrical firms on Tyler permits matched a TDLR record that was no longer active.

What this does not tell you

Tyler records no completion date, so days to final are an estimate from how long finaled permits stayed open. Tyler's electrical permits carry no job value, so we show no usual price. License status is our name match to TDLR's active-license file. The City's main site blocks automated reading, so its pages were read through a page reader; Building Services confirms current fees.

How we know this

Fees are quoted from the City of Tyler's Schedule of Fees, and registration, linked-permit and inspection steps from its Development & Planning FAQs and eTRAKiT and ProjectDox pages, read 23 October 2026. Counts are City of Tyler TRAKiT electrical permits on homes, October 2023 to September 2026; "finaled" uses permits a year or more old. License status is our name match to TDLR.

Numbers come from City of Tyler TRAKiT building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits on homes, from three city GIS exports of the permit table, data through October 9, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
