How to look up the permits on an Urbana address
- Open Community Development Permits Issued and choose to view the data.
- Filter Address for your street and house number, or Parcel Number if you have it from the county assessor.
- Read each row's Permit Type, Issue Date, Applicant and Permit Status. A new house gets separate building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical permits, so expect several rows per job.
- For work from 2001 to 2018, open that year's file on Previous Years Issued Permits and search it for the address.
- To confirm a final inspection, call the City at 217-384-0200 and ask for the Building Safety Division, with the permit number.
What the statuses mean
| Status in the file | What it means |
|---|---|
| Completed | Closed as complete |
| Issued | Issued, not closed in the system |
| Closed Without Final Inspection | Closed by the City with no final inspection on record |
| Closed | Closed |
| Expired | Lapsed |
Since the City's 2019 change of permit system, most permits stay marked Issued long after the work is done, including many from 2020 to 2023, so Issued alone doesn't mean the work was never inspected. For that reason our pages show no finished share. Closed Without Final Inspection is the one to ask about before buying a house.
When the record is not online
The City's site links a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request page from its main navigation. Ask for the permit, inspection history and any plans for the address, and give the permit number from the open data list if you have one.
What our Urbana pages add
The Urbana page counts permits issued September 2024 to August 2026 by kind of work:
| Kind of work | Permits (Sep 2024–Aug 2026) | Last 12 months (Sep 2025–Aug 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Plumbing | 960 | 465 |
| HVAC | 784 | 362 |
| Electrical | 547 | 284 |
| Remodels and repairs | 285 | 145 |
| Fences and walls | 232 | 115 |
| Solar | 221 | 122 |
| Roofing | 107 | 60 |
79% of the 3,562 permits were for homes. The permit statistics page has the file by year and month, and browse permits lists the rows without street addresses. Illinois does not license general contractors statewide; what to check instead is in How to check a contractor's license in Illinois.
What this does not tell you
The state copy was last updated on 23 September 2026, so September 2026 is not counted. It has no final inspection date and no ZIP code, so we show neither time to final nor ZIP pages. The value is the estimated cost on the application, on about three in four permits, not the final cost. We have not matched applicants to license records, so we count permits per firm and don't rate or rank them. Champaign, Savoy and unincorporated Champaign County run their own permit offices.
How we know this
The open data and legacy-list wording is quoted from the City of Urbana's Previous Years Issued Permits page, and the portal from its Permits and Applications page, both read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the State of Illinois open data copy of the City's permit list (dvw9-7wyx), read 23 October 2026: permits issued September 2024 to August 2026, with certificates of occupancy left out.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 23, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Urbana?
Filter the City's permit list, mirrored on data.illinois.gov as City of Urbana: Community Development Permits Issued, by your address. The City says permits issued since 1999 are in its open data, and each row has the permit number, type, issue date, applicant and status.
- Where are Urbana permits from before 2019?
The City's Previous Years Issued Permits page has one file per year of Building Safety Division permits from 2001 to 2017, plus January to May 2018, from its legacy system. The open data list also goes back to 1999.
- What does Issued mean on an Urbana permit?
The permit was issued and has not been closed in the City's system. Since the City changed permit systems in 2019, many permits still read Issued long after the work, so ask the City's Building Safety Division to confirm a final.
- Can I look up Urbana permits by contractor?
Yes: filter the open data list by the Applicant column, which often names the contractor. Our Urbana pages count permits per named firm from September 2024 to August 2026.
- How many permits does Urbana issue?
About 1,781 a year: 3,562 permits from September 2024 to August 2026, led by plumbing (960), HVAC (784) and electrical (547).
