Waco building permit search: how to look up permits on an address

To look up an existing permit in Waco, use the City's Citizen Self Service portal (EnerGov), which Inspection Services says offers "real-time inspection results" (Construction Permits, read 23 October 2026). Our 15,493 Waco permits from October 2023 to September 2026 come from the City's permit extract, brought up to date from that portal.

Where Waco permits live

Each permit in the portal has a public contact list. We take the contractor from it: the electrical contractor on an electrical permit, and so on, or else the general contractor. Applicants, owners and tenants are never used.

The City does not describe a contractor search. Our compare pages group the City's permits by the contractor listed for each trade. Inspection Services is on (254) 750-5612.

How to look up the permits on a Waco address

  1. Open Citizen Self Service and choose the search.
  2. Search the address or permit number.
  3. Open each permit and read its status and inspection results.
  4. Open the contacts on each permit to see which electrical, plumbing or mechanical contractor is listed.
  5. Check that contractor's licence on the TDLR licence search or, for plumbers, the plumbing board.

How to read Waco permit statuses

These are the statuses we read in the City's permit records:

Status in the record What it means Finished in our data?
Finaled / Issued/Finaled Final inspection passed; a finalize date is recorded Yes
Issued Work allowed, not yet finaled Not yet
Expired Lapsed before final No
Withdrawn / Canceled / Void / Denied Never worked Not counted

Irrigation and backflow permits are finaled only about one time in four, so a sprinkler permit still at Issued is common here. Completion rates compare each firm with permits of the same trade issued in the same quarter (Waco about page, methodology).

When the permit you want is not online

The City's permit pages we read do not set out a records request process for old permits. Ask Inspection Services on (254) 750-5612 whether it holds the file before you file a formal request.

What our Waco file adds

The portal answers "what was permitted at this address". We answer "what does this firm's Waco record look like".

Trade Permits Firms Finished Usual days to final
Electrical 3,624 203 89.4% 120
Plumbing 2,700 132 89.6% 126
HVAC 2,244 134 94.1% 108
Roofing 1,855 211 59.6% 53
New home 1,646 132 96.2% 167
Gas line 782 93 93.1% 2

1,214 firms pulled the 15,493 permits. Gas line permits close within days (2 is usual), while roofing permits are finished less often: 59.6%.

The Waco permit statistics page has the same file by trade, year and month; the firm lists are on the roofing, electrical and HVAC compare pages. To check the licence behind a name on a permit, use the Waco contractor license lookup; to check whether your job needs a permit at all, see Do I need a permit?.

What this does not tell you

Most remodel permits list only an applicant, so our remodel list covers only permits that name a general contractor. Trade permits carry a $0 job value. Our file covers October 2023 to September 2026.

How we know this

Portal details are quoted from the City of Waco's Construction Permits page, read 23 October 2026. Statuses and contractors are from the City's permit extract and Citizen Self Service permit records, October 2023 to September 2026.

Numbers come from City of Waco EnerGov building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits on homes (the city's June 9, 2026 permit extract, updated to October 22, 2026 from the city's Citizen Self Service permit search), with the contractor taken from each permit's public contact list on that site, data through October 22, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
