MABCD is a joint City of Wichita and Sedgwick County office, so the same rules and forms apply in unincorporated Sedgwick County and the small cities it serves; our numbers count the City of Wichita only.
The rule
MABCD's permits page (read 24 October 2026) lists Roofing and Re-roofing as its own permit, with Form 62 and one fee line: "$0.05 per square foot (Min. - $50.00 / Max. - $1,500.00)". New siding uses the same form, with fees "Based on Table B". Its Do I Need a Permit? page lets you repair or replace existing finish work such as paint, carpeting, cabinets and countertops without one; a roof is not on that list.
| Question | MABCD answer |
|---|---|
| Re-roof or new siding | Roofing and Siding permit, Form 62 |
| Fee | $0.05 per sq ft of roof, $50 min, $1,500 max |
| Area counted | Main floor finished area, attached garage, covered porch, covered patio, other covered area |
| Asked on the form | Layers removed (one, two, re-deck), use, roofing valuation |
| Contractor details | Kansas Roofer Registration Number and MABCD contractor license number |
| Where to apply | MABCD Portal online, or in person at 271 W. 3rd St. N., Suite 101 |
What it costs
The fee runs on the area under the roof, not the job price. A 1,500-square-foot ranch with a 400-square-foot attached garage is 1,900 square feet, so $95; you reach the $1,500 cap only at 30,000 square feet. The usual roofing permit in our file was declared at $10,183 (middle half $7,016 to $15,000, from 13,601 permits with a value), so the permit is about 1% of a typical job.
Who pulls it
Form 62 asks for the contractor's "KS Roofer Registration Number" and contractor license number, so a hired roofer applies under both. The Do I Need a Permit? page warns that a contractor who asks you to get the permit yourself is "a red flag" and says to call MABCD (316-660-1840) to check the firm's license and insurance. If you own the home but do not live in it, that page says you "MUST use a licensed contractor". Look a firm up under Lookup Contractor License in the MABCD Online LookUp.
How to apply
- Measure the roofed area: finished main floor, attached garage, covered porch and patio.
- Your roofer files Form 62 on the MABCD Portal (trade permits "can be obtained online at MABCD Portal or in-person"), with the layers being removed and the roofing valuation.
- Pay the square-foot fee.
- After issue, the Do I Need a Permit? page puts the permit holder in charge of "scheduling and passing all inspections". MABCD does not list the roofing inspection stages on these pages; ask when you file.
What 18,740 Wichita roofing permits show
| Measure | City of Wichita roofing, October 2024 to September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Permits issued | 18,740 (34% of all permits) |
| October 2024 to September 2025 / October 2025 to September 2026 | 4,134 / 14,606 |
| Finished, permits issued October 2024 to September 2025 | 97.3% (0.8% expired) |
| Usual declared value (middle half) | $10,183 ($7,016–$15,000) |
| Busiest / quietest month (index, 100 = average) | October (176) / January (51) |
| ZIPs with the most | 67212 (3,228), 67203 (2,786), 67205 (2,379), 67204 (1,596), 67213 (1,506) |
The surge starts in September 2025 (1,111 permits) and peaks in October 2025 (2,512), then stays between 688 and 1,657 a month from November 2025 to September 2026, against 82 to 606 a month from October 2024 to August 2025. The City's file does not say why. The west-side ZIPs 67212 and 67205 and 67203 hold 45% of all roofing permits. With 97.3% of the first year's permits closed, a Wichita roofing permit left open months after the crew leaves is unusual. Monthly counts are on Wichita roofing permits, every category on Wichita permit statistics, and individual rows on Wichita permits.

What this does not tell you
MABCD's file has no issue date, so permits are dated by application, and it names no contractor and records no final inspection date. A closed permit means MABCD closed it, not that a particular inspection passed.
How we know this
The permit rule, form, fee and homeowner warnings are quoted from MABCD's Permits and Do I Need a Permit? pages and its Form 62 (Rev. 10/30/2019), read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City of Wichita's MABCD Permits SDE layer, read 19 October 2026: roofing and siding permits on City of Wichita property applied for October 2024 to September 2026 that were issued.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Wichita?
Yes. The Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD) issues a separate Roofing and Siding permit on its Form 62, and its permits page lists it under Roofing and Re-roofing. In our file MABCD issued 18,740 roofing permits on City of Wichita property from October 2024 to September 2026.
- How much is a roofing permit in Wichita?
MABCD's permits page sets roofing fees at $0.05 per square foot, with a $50.00 minimum and a $1,500.00 maximum. Form 62 asks for the total square footage under the roof, including the attached garage and covered porches, so a 2,000-square-foot footprint works out to $100.
- Does a Wichita roofer need a license?
Form 62 asks for the contractor's Kansas Roofer Registration Number as well as an MABCD contractor license number. MABCD's online LookUp has a Lookup Contractor License search by license number or name.
- When is the busiest time for roofing permits in Wichita?
October, at an index of 176 against an average month of 100, from October 2024 to September 2026. January is the quietest (51). October 2025 alone had 2,512 roofing permits, the highest month in our file.
- Why did Wichita roofing permits jump in 2025?
Roofing permits rose from 4,134 (October 2024 to September 2025) to 14,606 (October 2025 to September 2026), after 1,111 in September 2025 and 2,512 in October 2025. The City's file does not record why.
