Where to search Wichita permits

MABCD permits the City of Wichita, unincorporated Sedgwick County and several small cities (Maize, Goddard, Mulvane and others) from one system, so the lookup covers all of them. Our Wichita pages count only the City of Wichita.

Tool Search by What it shows
Lookup Plan Reviews & Permits Permit number, applicant name, address (12-month date range) Each application and its details
Lookup Contractor License (same page) License number, applicant name MABCD contractor licenses
MABCD Permits SDE (City GIS) Any field Permit number, application date, type, occupancy, status, declared value, parcel; our source

MABCD's lookup guide says the building permit lookup covers "Building, Electrical, Fire Alarm, Manufactured Home, Mechanical, Plan Review, Plumbing, Roofing/Siding, Sewer, Well Water, and Wrecking permits".

How to look up the permits on a Wichita address

  1. Open the MABCD Online LookUp and click Address under Lookup Plan Reviews & Permits.
  2. Enter the number, direction and street name. The page says "Partial addresses can be used."
  3. Set Application Status to All (the choices are In Progress, Closed and All) and pick dates for "a 12 month period", which the address search requires.
  4. Search, open each result, and repeat with earlier 12-month ranges to go back further. Dates are application dates.
  5. For questions about a permit, call MABCD at (316) 660-1840, the number its lookup guide gives.

What the statuses mean

Status in the MABCD file What it means How we count it
Closed Permit closed out Finished
Issued Issued, not yet closed Open
Expired Lapsed Expired
Void, Denied, Deleted Did not go ahead Left out

Of the permits applied for October 2024 to September 2025, 98% were closed by our 19 October 2026 snapshot. The file has no final inspection date, so we can say whether a permit closed, not how long it took.

When the record is not online

MABCD is a Sedgwick County department, and the County's KORA page lists "Building Permits and Contractor Licenses" among its frequent requests. Submit a Kansas Open Records Act request on the web or by email through the County's Request County Records page. The County says that "Within three business days of receipt a County department must either provide records requested; inform the requester when, how and at what cost they will be provided, or state why the records cannot be provided" (read 24 October 2026).

Roofing permits more than tripled from the first year of the window to the second, from 4,134 to 14,606; the file does not say why. 80% of the 54,579 permits were on homes, and ZIP code 67212 had the most, 5,983, in the same window. The permit statistics page has year and month counts, permits by ZIP code splits them by area, and browse permits lists the rows.

What this does not tell you

The MABCD file names no contractor, so we have no firm lists for Wichita; use the lookup's contractor license search instead. It has no issue date, so we date permits by application. The declared value is filled on building and most roofing permits, while electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits carry no job value.

How we know this

Search options are quoted from the MABCD Online LookUp pages and MABCD's How to Look up Permits guide, and the records process from Sedgwick County's KORA page, all read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City of Wichita GIS MABCD Permits SDE layer, read 19 October 2026: permits for property in the City of Wichita applied for October 2024 to September 2026 and issued.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
