When each kind of work is filed

Permits by calendar month, 100 = an average month (the thin line), October 2024 through September 2026. Kinds of work do not all peak together. Each month is counted twice (once a year), so one unusual month still moves these numbers.

How Wichita compares with other cities

From our cross-city data studies: the same measure, read the same way, for every city we cover.

How these numbers are made

Source: City of Wichita GIS: MABCD Permits SDE (MISC/MABCD MapServer layer 1), read 19 Oct 2026. We count permits issued October 2024 through September 2026; denied and withdrawn permits are left out.

Permits the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD) issues for property inside the City of Wichita: building, roofing and siding, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and sewer, demolition (wrecking), manufactured-home, sign and fire-system permits. MABCD also issues permits for unincorporated Sedgwick County and several small cities (Maize, Goddard, Mulvane and others); those are in the same file but not counted here. Plan review applications, well permits and flood-plain permits are not counted.

  • The file names no contractor, so there are no contractor lists, rankings or firm pages for Wichita.
  • The file has no issue date, so permits are dated by their application date; applications MABCD had not yet issued are left out.
  • The file has no final inspection date, so we show no time to final. A permit counts as finished when MABCD marks it closed.
  • Roofing permits roughly tripled from September 2025 and stayed high into 2026; the file does not say why.
  • The declared value is filled on building and most roofing permits; electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits carry no job value.
  • Homes are permits whose occupancy is a one- or two-family dwelling or a home's garage, shed or other accessory building; apartment buildings count as other.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
