How these numbers are made

Source: King County Local Services, monthly Issued Permits Reports (Excel), read 23 Oct 2026. We count permits issued October 2024 through September 2026; denied and withdrawn permits are left out. The county's monthly report shows each permit's status only as of the month it was issued and never updates it, so no finished share is shown.

Building permits King County Local Services issues for unincorporated land only: homes, additions, remodels, heating and mechanical, demolition and commercial buildings. Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Kent, Renton and the other cities issue their own permits; Seattle and Bellevue have their own pages on this site. Fire, grading and right-of-way permits are not counted.

  • King County publishes its issued permits as a monthly spreadsheet; these pages stack the reports from October 2024 on.
  • Each permit is listed once, in the month it was issued, with its status as of that report, so the file can't say which permits were later finished, and there is no final date.
  • The county's file names no contractor (only the applicant, often the homeowner), so there are no contractor lists, rankings or firm pages for King County.
  • Electrical permits in unincorporated King County come from Washington Labor & Industries and plumbing permits from Public Health, so there are no electrical or plumbing counts here.
  • Residential mechanical permits (heat pumps, furnaces, ducts) are over half of the county's permits and carry no declared value; values are the job value on the other permits.
  • Additions, accessory buildings and remodels are split out of the county's addition/improvement permits by their descriptions.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
