Getting the permit vs finishing the work: two different clocks

“How long does a permit take?” can mean two waits. This page measures the second one.

Getting the permit (not measured): application → issue, the wait for the city to approve the plans. Ask the city for its current review times.

Finishing the work (measured here): issue → final. From the day the city issued the permit to the day it recorded the final inspection. We count only permits issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025, at least 12 months before the file ends, so slow jobs have had time to finish; a permit still open is not in the days.

By kind of work

Permits issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025. Usual days is the middle permit among those with a final date: half finished sooner, half later. Middle half is the range the middle 50% fell in. Kinds of work with fewer than 100 permits in that period are left out. The city's permit layer carries no permit status, and only building permits get a certificate of occupancy or completion in the public data, so there is no finished share.

How Las Cruces compares with other cities

From our cross-city data studies: the same measure, read the same way, for every city we cover.

How these numbers are made

Source: City of Las Cruces GIS, Information_Services map service (Accela feed): BuildingPermits and CertificateOFoccupancy layers, read 20 Oct 2026. We count permits issued October 2024 through September 2026; denied and withdrawn permits are left out. The city's permit layer carries no permit status, and only building permits get a certificate of occupancy or completion in the public data, so no finished share is shown.

Building, trade, solar, fence, sign and demolition permits the City of Las Cruces issued inside the city limits. Right-of-way, paving, site-improvement and utility permits are left out. Unincorporated Doña Ana County is permitted by the county and is not in this file.

  • The city's permit layer has no status, so we show no finished share.
  • A final date is the date of the certificate of occupancy or certificate of completion the city issued for a building permit (new homes, additions, alterations); electrical, plumbing, mechanical, roofing and solar permits have none, so time to final is shown only for building work.
  • The value is the project valuation on the permit. The city records no value on electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits, so those are left unpriced.
  • Homes are the permits the city files under its Residential project class plus manufactured-home installations. Solar, fence, window and door, and sign permits carry no residential or commercial class, so they count as other property in the homes figures.
  • The layer gives a street address and map point but no ZIP code, so there are no ZIP pages.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
