How these numbers are made

Source: City of San Antonio Open Data, Building Permits (Permits Issued 2020-2024 and Permits Issued), read 18 Oct 2026. We count permits issued October 2024 through September 2026; denied and withdrawn permits are left out. San Antonio's published permit file has no status and no final inspection date, so no finished share is shown.

Building, trade, sign and demolition permits the City of San Antonio Development Services Department issues inside the city limits. Unincorporated Bexar County and the separate cities inside or next to San Antonio (Alamo Heights, Leon Valley, Castle Hills, Converse, Live Oak, Schertz and others) run their own permit offices and are not in this file. Garage sale, tree, temporary sign and banner, sidewalk, street and sitework permits in the same file are not counted.

  • The city's file lists a primary contact for each permit, often a person and not the contractor of record, so we show no contractor lists, rankings or firm pages for San Antonio.
  • The file has no permit status or final inspection date, so it can't show which permits were finished or how long a permit takes.
  • A declared value is filled on only about 3% of permits, almost all commercial, so we show no costs.
  • A commercial building permit lists its electrical, plumbing and mechanical work under the same permit number; each number counts once, as the building permit.
  • Homes are the permit types the city files as residential: new homes, manufactured homes, residential repairs, additions, accessory dwellings, patios, carports, decks, sheds, fences and pools. Re-roof, foundation repair, solar and trade permits don't say whether the building is a home and count as other.
  • Lawn irrigation (sprinkler) permits are filed as plumbing permits by the city; we count them under other, not plumbing.
  • The ZIP code is read from the permit's address.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
