Burlington, VT building permit search: how to look up permits on an address

To look up an existing permit in Burlington, Vermont, use the City's OpenGov portal. The Department of Permitting and Inspections says "The City of Burlington utilizes OpenGov for its permitting and inspections records" (DPI, read 23 October 2026). Zoning permit applications are also on the City's open data site. Our 4,776 Burlington permits from October 2023 to September 2026 come from the City's OpenGov permit feed.

Where Burlington permits live

First-time users must create an account to log in and apply; the City's page does not say whether a search needs one. Permitting & Inspections answers on 802-863-0442. DPI offers short-form applications for "decks, windows, roofing, siding, fences, and signs", so those jobs should show up as permits too.

The City does not describe a contractor search. Our compare pages group the City's permits by the contractor named on them.

How to look up the permits on a Burlington address

  1. Open the OpenGov portal and search the address.
  2. Open each record for its status and inspection steps.
  3. Check the contractor named on electrical and building records. Mechanical and plumbing records carry no contractor name in the City's feed.
  4. For zoning permits (what was proposed and where), check the City's open data site.
  5. If a record is missing, call Permitting & Inspections on 802-863-0442.

How to read Burlington permit statuses

In the City's permit feed we read these statuses:

Status in the record What it means Finished in our data?
Closed Workflow complete; a completion date is recorded Yes
Open Work under way or not yet closed Not yet
Stopped Abandoned or halted No

A Stopped permit also carries a completion date, so do not read a date alone as a sign-off. The feed has no issue date, so our days run from the application and include plan review (Burlington about page, methodology).

When the permit you want is not online

For older files, start with Permitting & Inspections on 802-863-0442. City Hall is on 802-865-7000 (burlingtontownclerk@burlingtonvt.gov), and the City links its public records page from DPI's quick links (read 23 October 2026).

What our Burlington file adds

OpenGov answers "what was permitted at this address". We answer "what does this firm's Burlington record look like".

Trade Permits Firms Finished Usual days to final
Electrical 2,161 204 75.9% 80
Heat pump 585 78 82.4% 70
Roofing & siding 503 156 65.1% 206
Windows & doors 495 162 65.9% 265
Remodel 556 288 71.8% 323
Deck & porch 212 143 70.7% 366

1,091 firms pulled the 4,776 permits. Heat-pump installers appear through their electrical permits; 82.4% of heat-pump permits a year or more old were closed.

The Burlington permit statistics page has the same file by trade, year and month; the firm lists are on the electrical, heat pump and roofing compare pages. To check the licence behind a name on a permit, use the Burlington contractor license lookup; to check whether your job needs a permit at all, see Do I need a permit?.

What this does not tell you

The City's public feed paused from late April to October 2026 and has since caught up, so records run to 20 October 2026. There are no HVAC or plumbing rankings because those permits name no contractor. Our window is October 2023 to September 2026.

How we know this

Portal details are quoted from the City of Burlington's Permitting & Inspections and Permit Status Reports pages, read 23 October 2026. Statuses are from the City's OpenGov permit feed, October 2023 to September 2026.

Numbers come from City of Burlington permits on 1–4 family homes, condos and mobile homes (the city's OpenGov permit feed), data through October 20, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
