What each job was filed at
"Usual" is the middle permit: half were filed for less, half for more. "Middle half of firms" takes every firm with three or more permits in the trade, finds each firm's usual job, and shows the band the middle 50% of firms sit in; it is the number to hold a quote against.
| Job | Usual filed value | Middle half of firms | Permits (share priced) | Usual days to final | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EV charger | $1,600 | $1,000–$2,000 | 264 (100.0%) | 51 | cost · compare firms |
| Heat pump | $1,600 | $1,150–$2,100 | 585 (100.0%) | 70 | cost · compare firms |
| Electrical work | $2,000 | $1,500–$3,500 | 2,161 (99.7%) | 80 | cost · compare firms |
| Windows & doors | $9,725 | $7,561–$21,765 | 495 (99.6%) | 265 | cost · compare firms |
| Roofing & siding | $11,500 | $9,800–$14,000 | 503 (100.0%) | 206 | cost · compare firms |
| Remodel & repair | $14,000 | $11,570–$30,933 | 556 (100.0%) | 323 | cost · compare firms |
| Deck & porch | $15,000 | $9,100–$32,000 | 212 (99.1%) | 366 | cost · compare firms |
Burlington permits stay open a long time: the usual deck or porch took 366 days from issue to final and the usual remodel 323. Those days run to the final inspection, not to the end of the work.
What moves the price in Burlington
The home. Each cost page splits firms into thirds by the usual value of the homes they work on (City of Burlington 2026 assessed values). Burlington's single-family value figure is $386,000.
| Job | Firms on the least expensive third | Firms on the most expensive third |
|---|---|---|
| Windows & doors | $6,383 | $14,445 |
| Deck & porch | $15,000 | $23,974 |
| Remodel & repair | $15,000 | $18,500 |
| EV charger | $1,607 | $2,000 |
| Roofing & siding | $10,252 | $10,554 |
| Electrical work | $3,000 | $2,500 |
Figures from each cost page, data of 20 October 2026. Windows more than double and decks rise by 60% with home value; roofs and heat pumps don't move, and electrical work runs the other way.
The firm. In remodels the ten busiest firms usually file $12,000 a permit, while the 282 firms with fewer than ten permits usually file $17,000; in roofing it is $10,252 against $13,000 for 146 smaller firms (Burlington remodel and roofing cost pages). A busy firm's low usual figure means many small jobs, not a cheap rate.
The season. Heat-pump permits peak in October (index 178, where 100 is an average month) and are fewest in February (57); roofing peaks in August. We have no prices by month, so this is about crews' calendars, not discounts.
Filed value is not the price
- It is what the applicant wrote down. Heat-pump permits are usually filed at $1,600, a fraction of Seattle's $8,000, so check what a Burlington permit covered before using it as a price.
- Every permit is priced. Nearly all Burlington permits carry a value (100.0% of remodels, 99.7% of electrical), so the usual figures are not skewed by gaps.
- One permit type covers two jobs. Roofing and siding share a permit type.
- Fees. We could not read Burlington's fee schedule for this guide: the FY2025 schedule link on the City site returned "page not found" and the site would not connect for us on 23 October 2026. So we don't quote permit fees; the City's Permitting & Inspections office publishes them.
Check a quote in five minutes
- Find your job in the table and open its cost page.
- Put your quote against the "middle half of firms" band. Inside it is normal here; above it, ask what the extra covers.
- Open compare firms, find the contractor, and read its usual filed value, permit count and finished share.
- Put "permit closed with a final inspection" in the contract; in Burlington that step is the slow one.

How we know this
Every row is a permit type with a cost page: the City of Burlington issued at least 100 priced permits of it on 1–4 family homes, condos and mobile homes in the window 2023-10 to 2026-09, making up at least 80% of the type. Usual = median of the permits that carry a value; middle half of firms = 25th to 75th percentile of the usual value of firms with three or more permits in the trade (shown when at least eight firms qualify); days = median from permit issue to final inspection. Home-value thirds and busiest-firm figures are copied from each job's cost page and dated. No fee schedule was quoted.
Numbers come from City of Burlington permits on 1–4 family homes, condos and mobile homes (the city's OpenGov permit feed), data through October 20, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
