How to check a contractor's license in Arkansas

Arkansas licenses contractors by job size. A home improvement job over $2,000 on a single-family house needs a Home Improvement License from the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board, commercial work of $50,000 or more needs a commercial license, and electricians and HVAC contractors are on separate state rosters. In our Little Rock file 305 firms pulled 900 remodel permits from May 2023 to April 2026, and just 52.7% of those permits reached a final; checking the license is the first step, and the permit record the second.

Who licenses what in Arkansas

Work Who licenses it Where to check
Specialty work on a single-family home over $2,000 (labor and material) Contractors Licensing Board: Home Improvement License Find A Licensed Contractor
New homes Contractors Licensing Board's Residential Committee, created in 1999 "to license the builders of new homes in Arkansas" Same search
Commercial work of $50,000 or more Contractors Licensing Board: commercial license (business and law test) Same search
Electrical State Board of Electrical Examiners: Master, Journeyman, Residential Master, Residential Journeyman, Electrical Contractor and others Electrical roster
Heating and air conditioning HVAC Licensing Board HVAC roster

The thresholds are quoted from the board's license application page. Subcontractors working for a properly licensed prime contractor can hold a registration certificate instead of a full license.

How to look a contractor up, step by step

  1. Ask for the license number and type. A kitchen remodel over $2,000 should come with a Home Improvement License; the electrician and HVAC contractor under it need their own.
  2. Try the board's Find A Licensed Contractor search. When we checked on 25 October 2026 the page said "Our search is unavailable at this time"; if it still is, call 501-372-4661.
  3. For an electrician, open the electrical roster. Search by name or license number and tick only "Active" under status, so expired and revoked licenses drop out.
  4. For HVAC, search the HVAC roster by name and city.
  5. Look up the firm's permits in the city file. The board also publishes hearing findings ("Hearings – Finding Of Fact") on its site.

What the license does not tell you

We have Little Rock's permit file but no license match yet, so every Little Rock firm shows license status blank. The record still separates firms:

Little Rock, May 2023 – April 2026 Permits Firms Finished
HVAC 4,988 196 62.6%
Electrical 4,569 322 81.6%
Plumbing 3,948 255 88.5%
Remodel and repair 900 305 52.7%

Among HVAC firms with 10 or more permits, 14 of 46 close fewer than 70% of their permits, and the usual HVAC job is filed at $8,926. A licensed firm can still leave permits open; that is what the compare pages show.

We also publish permit counts for Fayetteville: 13,050 permits from October 2024 through September 2026, led by plumbing (4,041), HVAC (3,071) and electrical (2,624), with no contractor names. The Fayetteville building permit search guide shows how to look up an address.

Red flags on an Arkansas job

  • A home improvement quote over $2,000 from someone with no Home Improvement License number.
  • A job split into invoices just under $2,000.
  • An electrician whose roster status is Expired, Inactive or Revoked.
  • A firm whose permits in the city file mostly never reach a final.
  • A new-home builder who cannot name a Residential Committee license.

How we know this

Thresholds and license types are quoted from the Arkansas Department of Labor and Licensing's Contractors Licensing Board pages and its electrical and HVAC rosters, read 25 October 2026; the board's contractor search was unavailable that day. Little Rock figures come from the City of Little Rock's permit file, May 2023 to April 2026, and are not matched to license records. Fayetteville counts come from the city's public permit file, read 19 October 2026. "Finished" is the share of permits with a recorded final.

Numbers come from City of Little Rock Planning and Development permits on single-family, duplex and manufactured homes (the City's periodic permit download, the edition that runs to April 30, 2026), data through April 24, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • When does an Arkansas contractor need a license?

The Contractors Licensing Board says a commercial license "is needed if a contractor performs work of $50,000 or more", and a Home Improvement License is required for specialty work on a single-family home "if the project is more than $2,000, including, but not limited to, labor and material". New homes are licensed by the board's Residential Committee.

  • Where do I look up an Arkansas contractor?

The board's Find A Licensed Contractor page links its search. On 25 October 2026 the page said "Our search is unavailable at this time", so call the board at 501-372-4661 with the license number.

  • How do I check an Arkansas electrician?

Use the State Board of Electrical Examiners Roster on labor.arkansas.gov. Search by first name, last name, license number and status (Active, Inactive, Expired, Issued, Revoked) and filter by license type, from Residential Journeyman to Master and Electrical Contractor.

  • How do I check an Arkansas HVAC contractor?

Use the HVAC Roster on labor.arkansas.gov, searchable by first name, last name and city. Results can be exported; an export comes out blank when the search returns more than 3,000 records, so narrow it.

  • Do Little Rock permits show whether the contractor is licensed?

Not in our file. We have Little Rock permits back to May 2023 for 1,685 firms but have not matched them to Arkansas license records, so license status is blank, not failed.
