Home improvement costs in Greensboro, NC (2026): what 8 kinds of jobs were filed at

Going by permits filed with the City of Greensboro (2023-10 to 2026-09), the usual home job ran from $10,449 for a demolition to $66,975 for an addition and $189,075 for a new home. A deck was usually filed at $16,046, a solar system at $26,241 and a remodel at $35,000. These are the values contractors wrote on the permit, not quotes or final bills.

What each job was filed at

"Usual" is the middle permit: half were filed for less, half for more. "Middle half of firms" takes every firm with three or more permits in the trade, finds each firm's usual job, and shows the band the middle 50% of firms sit in; it is the number to hold a quote against. A dash (—) in the days column means too few permits of that type carry a final-inspection date to give a usual figure.

Demolition $10,449 $8,250–$15,000 142 (95.1%) — cost · compare firms

Electrical, HVAC, plumbing and driveway permits have compare pages but no cost page: Greensboro records no job value on them (0.0% of 16,678 HVAC permits carry one). The HVAC, plumbing and driveway compare pages still rank firms by permits and finished share.

What moves the price in Greensboro

The home. Each cost page splits firms into thirds by the usual value of the homes they work on (Guilford County parcel values, matched by address). Greensboro's single-family value figure is $177,000.

Job Firms on the least expensive third Firms on the most expensive third
Garage & shed $10,907 $78,000
Deck $5,000 $20,579
Home addition $48,750 $157,700
Remodel & repair $28,000 $55,249
Foundation & crawl space $8,500 $12,315
New home $181,875 $192,780

Figures from each cost page, data of 18 October 2026. Garages go from a shed to a real garage, and decks and additions roughly triple or quadruple with home value; new homes hardly move ($181,875 against $192,780), so for a new home the neighbourhood is not what sets the figure.

The firm. In additions the ten busiest firms usually file $160,315 a permit, against $65,000 for the 159 firms with fewer than ten permits (Greensboro addition cost page). Garages run the other way: $10,907 for the ten busiest, $54,200 for 58 smaller firms (Greensboro garage cost page), so the busiest names there are mostly putting up sheds.

The season. Deck permits peak in July (index 178, where 100 is an average month) and are fewest in January (25). We have no prices by month, so this is about crews' calendars, not discounts.

Filed value is not the price

  • It is what the applicant wrote down. Some contractors write the contract price, some the permitted part only.
  • Trade permits carry no value. Electrical, HVAC and plumbing are unpriced here, so this page says nothing about their prices.
  • The lot. New-home values are construction only.
  • Fees. We could not read Greensboro's residential fee schedule for this guide: the fee document we opened (Development Services Document #4000) covers commercial projects only, and the City's permit-fee pages would not open for us on 23 October 2026. So we don't quote permit fees; the City's Development Services pages publish them.

Check a quote in five minutes

  1. Find your job in the table and open its cost page.
  2. Put your quote against the "middle half of firms" band. Inside it is normal here; above it, ask what the extra covers.
  3. Open compare firms, find the contractor, and read its usual filed value, permit count and finished share.
  4. Ask whether the price includes the permit fee and the final inspection; the usual remodel permit here took 126 days to reach final.

How we know this

Every row is a permit type with a cost page: the City of Greensboro issued at least 100 priced permits of it in the window 2023-10 to 2026-09, making up at least 80% of the type. Usual = median of the permits that carry a value; middle half of firms = 25th to 75th percentile of the usual value of firms with three or more permits in the trade (shown when at least eight firms qualify); days = median from permit issue to final inspection. Home-value thirds and busiest-firm figures are copied from each job's cost page and dated. No fee schedule was quoted.

Numbers come from City of Greensboro building and trade permits, data through October 18, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
