Greensboro building permit search: look up permits and inspections by address

To look up a permit in Greensboro, use the City's GSO BI Scheduler. Its help page describes it as the tool to "Lookup up Permits and Inspections by Address or Permit Number" (read 23 October 2026), and the same site schedules inspections. It does not search by contractor. In our Greensboro file, 3,014 firms pulled 49,860 building and trade permits on homes from October 2023 to September 2026.

How to look up permits on a Greensboro address

  1. Open the permit search.
  2. Enter the address, or the permit number from the card posted on site.
  3. Open each permit. Greensboro issues separate electrical, mechanical (HVAC) and plumbing permits, so a remodel can show several.
  4. Read the inspections on each one and look for the final.
  5. Check that the contractor named on each trade permit is the one you hired. Another name means another firm's license is on your job.

If the address is outside city limits, the City's records page says to request records from Guilford County.

What the statuses mean

The City's permit layer (counted 23 October 2026) uses four statuses: Final Inspection Made, Expired, Issued and Active. Our pages count Final Inspection Made as finished and time it from issue to the final inspection date. An Expired permit counts against the firm (Greensboro about page; methodology).

Trade Permits Firms Final inspection made (a year or more old) Usual days to final
Electrical 17,544 942 93.9% 52
HVAC 16,678 545 89.7% 48
Plumbing 8,165 415 94.1% 121
Remodel 1,509 405 85.4% 126
Addition 393 167 89.4% 179
New home 2,341 123 97.7% 156

Greensboro finals most permits, and fast: the usual HVAC permit closes in 48 days. So an HVAC or electrical permit still Issued months after the install is out of the ordinary, and Expired means the work was never signed off.

When the record is not online

The City's Records You Don't Have to Request page lists building permits and inspections for properties in the City among the records you can get without a request. For anything else, it says to contact the Public Records Requests Administrator by email or at 336-373-3636 (read 23 October 2026).

What our Greensboro data adds

The Scheduler shows one address or permit. Ours lists every Greensboro permit a firm pulled in three years: the Greensboro permit statistics, and the compare lists for electricians, HVAC and plumbers. The North Carolina license checks are in the Greensboro contractor license lookup, and Do I need a permit? covers which jobs need one.
