Where to look for Hoboken permits
The Hoboken Construction Code Office enforces the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code for the City of Hoboken only. Jersey City, Weehawken, Union City and the rest of Hudson County have their own construction offices.

How to look up the permits on a Hoboken address
- Create an account at hobokennj.gov/SDL and sign in to the SDL Portal.
- Search the property, then open each permit and read its status.
- For a list, open NJ Construction Permit Data, filter it to Hoboken, and then to the property's block and lot.
- Check whether a certificate was issued: a certificate of occupancy (CO), certificate of approval (CA), certificate of continued occupancy (CCO) or temporary CO (TCO).
- If neither shows the job, call the Construction Code Office at City Hall, 94 Washington St.
What the statuses mean
In the state register, a Hoboken permit with status C has a certificate on file. Of the 8,160 Hoboken rows in the register (2021 to August 2026), 777 (9.5%) carried one: 468 COs, 183 CAs, 78 CCOs and 48 TCOs. Every other row reads as issued with no certificate. Hoboken seldom files certificates of approval with the state, so a missing certificate in the register does not mean the work failed or was never inspected. Ask the Construction Code Office, or look in the SDL Portal, for the certificate.
When the record is not online
Permit files can be requested under the Open Public Records Act (OPRA). The City Clerk takes OPRA requests in person or by mail during business hours, by email to cityclerk@hobokennj.gov with the OPRA Request Form "scanned & attached", or by fax to (201) 420-2085. For records that need a search, the City says you get an interim report within seven business days saying how long the full request will take (Access Public Records, read 24 October 2026).
What our Hoboken pages add
Our Hoboken page counts Hoboken's permits in the state register, July 2025 to July 2026:
| Kind of work | Permits (Jul 2025–Jul 2026) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Remodels and repairs | 981 | 59% |
| Plumbing | 222 | 13% |
| Electrical | 118 | 7% |
| Other | 310 | 19% |
80% were for homes, which in Hoboken includes apartment and condominium buildings. Nearly every permit is filed as an alteration; we count a permit as electrical or plumbing only when it carried just that trade's fee. The permit statistics page has month counts, and browse permits lists the rows.
What this does not tell you
The state register names no contractor, so we have no firm lists for Hoboken. It can't show which permits finished or how long they take. The value is the estimated construction cost on the permit, which sets the fee, not the final cost.
How we know this
The SDL Portal description is quoted from the City of Hoboken's SDL Portal page, the office contact and hours from its Construction Code page, and the OPRA routes from its Access Public Records page, all read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the NJ Department of Community Affairs' NJ Construction Permit Data, Hoboken rows, read 19 October 2026: permits issued July 2025 to July 2026.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my apartment or house in Hoboken?
Create an account on the City's SDL Portal (hobokennj.gov/SDL), which the City says lets you check permit statuses and search property information. Or filter the state's NJ Construction Permit Data on data.nj.gov to Hoboken and your block and lot.
- Are Hoboken building permits public record?
Yes. Hoboken reports its construction permits to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, which publishes them on data.nj.gov, and permit files can be requested from the City under the Open Public Records Act.
- How do I get an old Hoboken permit file?
File an OPRA request with the City Clerk using the City's OPRA Request Form: in person, by mail, by email to cityclerk@hobokennj.gov with the form scanned and attached, or by fax to (201) 420-2085.
- How many building permits does Hoboken issue?
About 1,533 a year: 1,661 permits issued July 2025 to July 2026 in the state register's Hoboken rows. 981 of them (59%) were remodels and repairs.
- Why can't I see whether a Hoboken permit was finished?
Hoboken seldom reports certificates of approval to the state: only 9.5% of its rows in the register carry a certificate. Ask the Construction Code Office, (201) 420-2000 x 1070, whether a certificate of approval was issued.
