Lynchburg building permit search: how to look up permits on an address

To look up a building permit in Lynchburg, Virginia, use the City's eTRAKiT portal, linked from the Community Development page. Its public menu offers Search Permit, Search Contractors and parcel, project, licence and case searches (checked 24 October 2026). The same permits are published as the city's open Building Permits table "according to Community Development's TRAKiT system", which is the source of our 2,959 Lynchburg permits issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Which addresses this covers

The City of Lynchburg Department of Community Development issues building and trade permits inside the city. Lynchburg is an independent city, so a home with a Lynchburg mailing address in Bedford, Campbell or Amherst County gets its permits from that county.

How to look up the permits on a Lynchburg address

  1. Confirm the house is inside Lynchburg city limits, not one of the surrounding counties.
  2. Open eTRAKiT and choose Search Permit (or the parcel search) and enter the address.
  3. Open each permit. A typical job has a BUILDING permit plus separate ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL and PLUMBING permits; small homeowner jobs may be RESIDENTIAL EZPERMIT types.
  4. Read the status and the end date. FINALED with an end date means the final inspection passed.
  5. For a list, open the open permit table, choose Query, and filter Address with your house number and street, for example Address LIKE '900 CHURCH%'.
  6. Check the contractor's licence on the Virginia DPOR lookup; our Virginia licence guide explains the classes.

When the record you want is not online

The city's open table goes back to 2000, so most permits since then can be found there by address or parcel. For anything else, ask the Permitting, Inspections and Code Compliance division at the 1st Floor Permitting Center, 900 Church Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504, on 434-455-3910 (Submitting Online, read 24 October 2026). Virginia's Freedom of Information Act covers city permit records; we did not find a permit-specific request page on the city's site.

What our Lynchburg pages add

Our Lynchburg page counts the city's permit file by kind of work, October 2024 to September 2026. Days to final are for permits issued October 2024 to September 2025 that reached a final.

76% of the 2,959 permits were for homes. The usual permit took 93 days from issue to final (middle half 22 to 182 days) on how long permits take; the permit statistics page has counts by year and month, and browse permits lists the rows. Whether a job needs a permit is in Do I need a permit?

What this does not tell you

The city's open file leaves the contact field blank, so we cannot say who did the work. It has no ZIP code and no homes flag on building permits, so a permit counts as a home when its parcel is a residential property class. Job value is the figure declared on the permit, and many trade permits carry none.

How we know this

The portal and contact details are from the City of Lynchburg's Community Development and Submitting Online pages and the eTRAKiT home page, read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the city's Building Permits - Tabluar open data layer, read 20 October 2026: building and trade permits issued October 2024 to September 2026, City of Lynchburg only.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 20, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Lynchburg?

Open the city's eTRAKiT portal (etrakit.lynchburgva.gov) and use Search Permit, or the parcel search, for your address. For a sortable list, filter the city's open Building Permits table by Address or ParcelID.

  • Can I look up Lynchburg permits by contractor?

eTRAKiT has a Search Contractors page. The city's open permit table leaves the contact field blank on every row, so our pages do not list or rank firms; check a contractor's Virginia licence on the DPOR lookup.

  • My address says Lynchburg but the city has no permit for it. Why?

Lynchburg is an independent city. Homes with a Lynchburg mailing address in Bedford, Campbell or Amherst County get their permits from that county.

  • What does FINALED mean on a Lynchburg permit?

The permit passed its final inspection and the city recorded an end date. Of permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 84% were FINALED by our count; the usual one took 93 days from issue.

  • Who do I ask about an old Lynchburg permit that is not online?

The Permitting, Inspections and Code Compliance division at the 1st Floor Permitting Center, 900 Church Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504, phone 434-455-3910.
