Newark building permit search: how to look up a permit in Newark, NJ

Newark, New Jersey has no public online permit search. The City's Building Division page links a FastTrackGov portal, but that portal is for applying, paying and booking inspections, not for searching records. The public record of Newark's permits is the state's NJ Construction Permit Data, the register every New Jersey town reports to; it is the source of our 6,725 Newark permits from August 2024 to July 2026.

Where Newark permits can be found

Where Search by What it shows
Building Division, 920 Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Blvd, Room B23 (973-733-3957) Address or permit number, in person or by phone The City's own permit file
FastTrackGov portal Your own permits, after login Pay construction permit balances, request inspections on issued permits, apply for tank removal permits
NJ Construction Permit Data (open data) Municipality, block, lot, permit number, dates Permit or certificate, permit type, use group, estimated construction cost, fees; no street address and no contractor

The FastTrackGov portal says: "Due to state requirements for raised seals on plans, the City of Newark is currently only able to accept online applications for Tank Removal permits. Any other application must be brought into the office." It adds that "Inspection requests can now be submitted online for UCC permits issued through the Building Department" (read 24 October 2026).

How to look up the permits on a Newark address

  1. Find the property's block and lot. It is on the property tax bill and the deed.
  2. Open NJ Construction Permit Data and filter muniname to NEWARK.
  3. Filter block and lot. The register writes them without the dot: block 5088.01 is 508801, lot 76.01 is 7601.
  4. Read each row's permitno, permitdate, permittypedesc (Alteration, New, Addition, Demolition) and permitstatusdesc.
  5. Take the permit numbers to the Building Division to see the full file, inspections and any certificate.

What the statuses mean

The state register has two statuses and no others:

Status in the register What it means How to read it
Permit Issued; no certificate reported to the state Open, or closed without the certificate being reported
Certificate A Certificate of Approval or Certificate of Occupancy was reported, with its date Finished

There is no expired or cancelled status. Newark reports a certificate to the state for only about one permit in seven, so the register can't show which permits finished or how long a permit takes, and our Newark pages show neither.

When the record is not online

The City's Building Division page lists the office, not a records-request process, and we could not read a Newark records-request page, so we don't describe one here. Start with the Building Division at 973-733-3957 and the permit numbers from the state register.

What our Newark pages add

Our Newark page counts the permits Newark reported to the state, August 2024 to July 2026:

Kind of work Permits (Aug 2024–Jul 2026) Last 12 months (Aug 2025–Jul 2026) Homes
Remodels and repairs 2,535 1,213 100%
Electrical 906 443 69%
Demolition 725 338 8%
Plumbing 478 297 89%
New homes 369 195 100%

Electrical and plumbing here are permits that carried only that trade's fee; any job with a building fee counts as a remodel. Homes include apartment buildings as well as one- and two-family houses: 66% of the 6,725 permits. The permit statistics page has the file by year and month, and browse permits lists the rows without owner names.

What this does not tell you

The state register names no contractor and has no ZIP code, so there are no firm lists or ZIP pages for Newark. The value on each permit is the estimated construction cost that sets the fee, not the final cost. The register was last updated in August 2026, so our window ends in July 2026.

How we know this

The Building Division's address and phone are from the City of Newark's Building Division page, and the portal wording from Newark's FastTrackGov portal links page, both read 24 October 2026. Our counts are Newark's rows in the NJ Department of Community Affairs' NJ Construction Permit Data, read 23 October 2026: permits issued August 2024 to July 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 23, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Newark, NJ?

Newark has no public online permit search. Filter the state's NJ Construction Permit Data on data.nj.gov to Newark and your block and lot, or ask the Building Division at 920 Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Blvd, Room B23 (973-733-3957).

  • Can I apply for a Newark building permit online?

Mostly not. The City's FastTrackGov portal says that, due to state requirements for raised seals on plans, it can only accept online applications for tank removal permits; other applications must be brought into the office. Inspections on issued permits can be requested online.

  • Can I see which contractor pulled a Newark permit?

Not from public data. The state register Newark reports to has no contractor column, so our Newark pages have no firm lists. Ask the contractor for the permit number and confirm it with the Building Division.

  • How do I know if a Newark permit was closed out?

In the state register a finished job shows as Certificate, with a Certificate of Approval or Certificate of Occupancy and its date. Newark reports a certificate for only about one permit in seven, so a missing certificate there is not proof the job was never closed; ask the Building Division.

  • How many building permits does Newark issue?

About 3,362 a year: 6,725 permits from August 2024 to July 2026, 2,535 of them remodels and repairs.
