Polk County, FL building permit search: Accela, the historical lookup and records

To look up a permit in unincorporated Polk County, Florida, search the address or parcel in the County's Accela Citizen Access portal. The County's building permits page says Accela holds "permits from 2010 to the present", and that its Building Historical Permit Lookup lets you "view historical building permits dating back 15 years" (read 24 October 2026). Lakeland, Winter Haven, Haines City, Davenport, Bartow, Lake Wales and the other cities issue their own permits. Our Polk County pages count 15,936 permits issued on unincorporated land from October 2024 to September 2026, from the Property Appraiser's permit file.

How to look up the permits on a Polk County address

  1. Confirm the property is outside city limits. If it is inside Lakeland, Winter Haven or another city, that city's permit office holds the record.
  2. Open the Accela Building search, choose Search by Address, and enter the street number and street name.
  3. Open each record. Electrical, plumbing, mechanical, re-roof and pool permits are separate record types.
  4. Read the status and inspections on each record.
  5. If Accela has nothing for an older job, search the same address or parcel in the historical lookup, which the County says goes back 15 years.

What the statuses mean in our Polk County file

The Property Appraiser's file marks a permit S (open) or C (complete), and gives a final date for the County's final inspection of a new building or addition.

In the file Counted as
Final date present, or status C (complete) Finished
Status S, no final date Still open

For permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 90.1% had finished and 9.9% were still open. The file has no expired status, so a lapsed permit reads as open. Accela's own statuses are more detailed; read them there.

When you need old documents

The historical lookup says "To view historical permit documents, please visit Polk County Records" (documents from 2010 on are in Accela). For anything else, the County's public records page takes requests through its online Public Records Center, by email to RMLO@polkfl.gov or by phone at (863) 534-7670 (read 24 October 2026).

What our Polk County pages add

Accela answers "what was permitted at this address". Ours answer "how long does this kind of job usually take here", from permits issued October 2024 to September 2025:

Kind of work Permits Finished Usual days to final
New homes 2,027 85.5% 158
Garages, sheds & shade structures 1,480 94.1% 49
Solar 1,247 94.4% 26
Remodels & repairs 999 93.1% 55
Electrical 456 93.9% 41
Pools & spas 372 93.3% 117
Demolition 334 97.0% 50

Across all kinds of work the usual permit took 83 days (same permits). The busiest ZIP codes for October 2024 to September 2026 were 33837 (1,859 permits, mostly new homes) and 34759 (1,597, mostly solar).

What this does not tell you

The Property Appraiser's file names no contractor, so there are no firm lists for Polk County, and it leaves out permits that do not change taxable value: re-roofs, fences, driveways and most repairs are undercounted or missing.

How we know this

Search tools and record coverage are quoted from Polk County's building permits page, Building Historical Permit Lookup and public records page, and the Accela search fields were read from the portal, all on 24 October 2026. Our counts are the Polk County Property Appraiser's permit file, County permits on unincorporated land issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 20, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Polk County, FL?

If the house is in unincorporated Polk County, search the address or parcel number in the County's Accela Citizen Access portal, which the County says holds permits from 2010 to now. If Accela has nothing, try the Building Historical Permit Lookup, which the County says goes back 15 years. If you live inside Lakeland, Winter Haven, Haines City or another city, search that city's permit system instead.

  • Can I search Polk County permits by contractor?

Yes, in Accela. Its Building search has a Search by Licensed Professional Information option with license type, state license number and business name fields.

  • How do I get old Polk County permit documents?

The historical lookup points to Polk County Records for historical permit documents. For anything else, file a request with the County's Public Records Center online, by email to RMLO@polkfl.gov, or by phone at (863) 534-7670.

  • Why is my re-roof missing from the Polk County numbers on this site?

Our counts come from the Property Appraiser's permit file, which only collects permits that can change a property's taxable value. Re-roofs, fences and most like-for-like repairs are left out; the County's Accela search still has them.

  • How long does a Polk County permit take to reach a final?

For permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, the usual one took 83 days from issue to final. Solar took 26 days, a pool 117 and a new home 158.
