Rockville, MD building permit search: MGO, the permit map and Permit Plan

To look up a City of Rockville permit, type the street address into the City's public permit map, which needs no account and "is updated nightly on weekdays". Permits applied for since 25 October 2021 are in MyGovernmentOnline (MGO Connect), where "A user account is required to perform an advanced search"; older ones are in Permit Plan (Search Permits and Property History, read 24 October 2026). In the City's permit map layer, 5,779 permits were issued from October 2024 to September 2026.

Where to look for Rockville permits

The City of Rockville permits work inside the city limits only. Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services covers the rest of the county (see our Montgomery County permit search guide), and WSSC Water permits plumbing and gas-service connections.

How to look up the permits on a Rockville address

  1. Confirm the property is inside City of Rockville limits; if not, search Montgomery County instead.
  2. Open the permit map and type the street address in the search bar.
  3. Open each permit at the address and read its status. Rockville files gas appliances, furnaces, plumbing and electrical work as separate permits.
  4. For anything applied for before 25 October 2021, look the property up in Permit Plan.
  5. Compare the contractor on the permit with the one on your contract. If a permit is missing, email permits@rockvillemd.gov.

What the statuses mean in Rockville's file

Status in the record What it means Finished in our data?
Project Closed/Complete, Complete Final passed and the case closed Yes
Permit Issued, Active Permit in force, no final yet Not yet
Expired Lapsed before a final No
Closed/Terminated Closed without completing No
Pending (Under Review), Awaiting Payment, Approved Not yet issued Not counted

On our Rockville page, 82% of the permits issued October 2024 to September 2025 were finished. The layer has no final inspection date, so we show no time to final.

When the permit you want is not online

The City's search page does not describe a formal records request. It says: "If you are unable to find the permit you are looking for, email permits@rockvillemd.gov for assistance." Inspection Services answers on 240-314-8240, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (read 24 October 2026).

What our Rockville pages add

Our Rockville page counts the City's permits by kind of work, October 2024 to September 2026:

Kind of work Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) Share
Plumbing 1,636 28%
Electrical 942 16%
HVAC 880 15%
Fences and walls 301 5%
Solar 294 5%
Garages, sheds and shade structures 145 3%
Remodels and repairs 106 2%

Plumbing leads because gas hook-ups for stoves, ranges and dryers count there. 57% of the 5,779 permits (October 2024 to September 2026) were for homes. ZIP 20850 had the most, 3,227 (56%); see Rockville permits by ZIP code. 35% of the permits name a contractor company, and the Rockville page lists the companies named on the most, by count only. The permit statistics page has year and month counts, and browse permits lists the rows. To check a home improvement contractor, use the Maryland Home Improvement Commission license search.

What this does not tell you

The City's map layer has no issue date (we date permits by when the case opened), shows a job value of zero on every permit and has no final date. Many permits list an expediter or the owner rather than the contractor. Permits from before October 2021 are not in our file.

How we know this

Search tools, permit number formats and contacts are quoted from the City of Rockville's Search Permits and Property History page, read 24 October 2026. Statuses and counts are from the City's MGO_Permit_View map layer, read 20 October 2026: permits opened October 2024 to September 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 20, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Rockville?

If the house is inside City of Rockville limits, type the street address into the City's public permit map, which needs no account. For permits applied for before 25 October 2021, look in Permit Plan. If you still cannot find it, email permits@rockvillemd.gov.

  • Why can't I find my Rockville permit in the City's search?

Many homes with a Rockville mailing address are outside the city, where Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services issues permits. Plumbing and gas-service connections are permitted by WSSC Water.

  • How do I find an old Rockville permit from before 2021?

The City says permits applied for before 25 October 2021 are in Permit Plan, numbered BLD20xx-xxxxx. Newer permits are numbered 202x-xxxxx-xxx and are in MGO.

  • Can I look up Rockville permits by contractor?

The City's search page does not describe a contractor search. Its permit map layer names a contractor company on about a third of permits; our Rockville page lists the companies named on the most, as a count only.

  • Do I need an account to search Rockville permits?

Not for the permit map. The City says a user account is required for an advanced search in MyGovernmentOnline (MGO) Connect.
