How Rockville compares with other cities

From our cross-city data studies: the same measure, read the same way, for every city we cover.

How these numbers are made

Source: City of Rockville MGO permit map layer (MGO_Permit_View, ArcGIS), read 20 Oct 2026. We count permits issued October 2024 through September 2026; denied and withdrawn permits are left out.

Building, trade, fence, sign and fire-protection permits the City of Rockville issues inside the city limits. Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services covers the rest of the county, so a Rockville mailing address outside the city is not in this file. Plumbing and gas-service connections that WSSC Water permits are not in it either.

  • The city's permit layer names a contractor company on only about a third of permits; many others list a permit expediter or the owner as applicant, which we don't treat as the contractor.
  • The layer has no issue date, so a permit is dated by the day its case was opened; cases still under review, awaiting payment or approved but not yet issued are not counted.
  • The layer's job value is zero on every permit and it has no final inspection date, so we show no costs and no time to final.
  • Rockville moved to its current permit system (MyGovernmentOnline) in late October 2021; older permits are not in the layer.
  • Gas appliance hook-ups (stoves, ranges, dryers) that the city files as mechanical permits are counted as plumbing (gas line) work; furnace, air-conditioner and heat-pump jobs are HVAC.
  • Fire sprinkler and alarm permits, signs and commercial tenant fit-outs are counted under Other.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
