Data through September 2026 · updated 19 Oct 2026
6,026 building permits were issued in Tacoma from October 2024 to September 2026, about 3,013 a year. HVAC permits lead with 2,784, then remodels & repairs (1,223) and plumbing (931). 100% were for homes. The city's file doesn't name contractors, so we can't rank, compare or profile firms here: these pages show what was built, where and when.
Residential building permits the City of Tacoma Planning and Development Services issues inside the city: heating and cooling, plumbing, alterations, new houses, ADUs and demolition, for houses, duplexes and small apartment buildings. Commercial permits, site development, utility connections, right-of-way and sign permits in the same file are not counted. Unincorporated Pierce County and the neighbouring cities (Lakewood, University Place, Fife, Puyallup and the rest) run their own permit offices and are not in this file.
The permit file can't tell you who does good work. Ask for the contractor's license number and look it up at the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, then ask the city whether they pulled the permit for your job.
