The Town's rule

From the Town's Residential Permits FAQ, read 23 October 2026:

Job Permit in Cary?
Hardwired EV charging station Yes: "electric vehicle charging stations"
New 240-volt receptacle for a plug-in charger Yes: adding or relocating "lighting and receptacle outlets"
Panel or service upgrade to make room for the charger Yes: electrical work on the house's systems
Replacing a fixture or component with no work in the wall or ceiling cavity No

The FAQ refers EV owners to the Town's Residential Electric Vehicle Supply Guide for the details. The general rule underneath is "A permit is required anytime work is done on a building or structure, or the systems serving the structure." Questions: 311, or (919) 469-4000 from outside Cary.

Who can pull it

A licensed electrical contractor, licensed by the NC Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors; the Town asks for "all of your contractors' names, addresses and state license numbers" on the application, and checks them in plan review. Search the license on the NCBEEC search.

You, on your own home. The Town says "an owner of the property can do their own building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work", provided the property is the owner's primary residence for at least 12 months after completion. More: Cary contractor license lookup.

Inspections and expiry

  • Which inspections. Set by plan review and "listed on the permit documents at issuance."
  • Booking. In Building Permits Online, at Town Hall (316 N. Academy St.), or by calling 311.
  • Expiry. "A permit is active for six months without any activity, or one year after the last inspection"; after that, a new permit "with the fees doubled" (Residential Inspections Information).
  • Done means certified. After all required inspections pass, a Certificate of Compliance goes to the contractor and the owner.

Fees

The Town's FAQ points to its Fees Estimation Guide for fee charts; we could not open it to confirm the current residential electrical fee, so we give no figure. Ask 311 before you budget.

What 2,922 Cary EV charger permits show

Measure Cary EV chargers
Permits, October 2023 to September 2026 2,922
Firms 244
Firms with a permit in the 12 months to September 2026 134
Usual filed value $1,104
Middle half of firms' usual job value $1,000 to $1,400
Usual days from issue to final 17
Passed final (a year or more old) 95.0%
10th-percentile firm (10+ permits) 93.2%
Share held by the busiest firm / five busiest 24.0% / 49.4%
Firms with a single permit 39.3%

Three things for a buyer. Prices cluster tightly: the middle half of firms charge $1,000 to $1,400, so a quote far above that for a standard install deserves a line-by-line explanation (a panel upgrade is one legitimate reason). Finish rates are high across the board; even the 10th-percentile firm with 10+ permits finals 93.2%. And the market is concentrated: Triad Electrical Serv filed 214 permits in the 12 months to September 2026, while 39.3% of firms filed one. Prices by home value: Cary EV charger cost.

Check it in five minutes

  1. Ask for the electrician's state license number and search the NCBEEC.
  2. Ask whether your panel has room for the charger's dedicated circuit, or whether the quote includes a panel or service upgrade (a separate scope and a bigger bill).
  3. After the install, look up your address in Building Permits Online (how) and check for the Certificate of Compliance.
  4. Compare installers on the Cary EV charger list.

What this does not tell you

Our EV charger trade counts permits the Town filed as EV work; a charger added under a broader electrical or panel permit sits in electrical. About 1 in 7 Cary permits, mostly in the Chatham County part of town, has no Wake County home value. License status is not on our Cary pages. More: Cary permit statistics.
