Which addresses this covers
Fairfax County Land Development Services issues permits for the county and the towns of Vienna, Herndon and Clifton, including Reston, McLean, Springfield, Annandale, Centreville and Chantilly. The independent City of Fairfax and City of Falls Church run their own offices; a Fairfax or Falls Church mailing address outside those cities is the county's.
| Tool | Search by | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| PLUS, Building tab | Address, record number, parcel ID, project name, licensed professional | Permits and applications since PLUS, with status |
| Development Tracker | Address | Active construction, recent building permits, zoning cases and certificates of occupancy on a map |
| LDIH | Address and record | Building, site, zoning and complaint records uploaded before PLUS launched |
| Building Records PLUS (open data) | Any field: address, parcel, record ID | Record type, status, issued and closed dates; our source |
How to look up the permits on a Fairfax County address
- Confirm the house is not inside the City of Fairfax or the City of Falls Church.
- Open PLUS and choose Search by Address in the General Search menu.
- Enter the street number and street name, then open each record in the results.
- Read the status and the inspections on each permit. A finished job is Closed.
- For work from before October 2022, repeat the search in LDIH; LDS says it "contains only those records that were uploaded prior to the launch of PLUS".
- Check the contractor's licence on the Virginia DPOR lookup; our Virginia licence guide explains the classes.
What the statuses mean
| Status in the county's file | What it means | Finished in our data? |
|---|---|---|
| Closed | The county closed the permit after final | Yes |
| Issued | Issued, work under way or not yet finaled | Not yet |
| Issued - Amendment Pending | Issued, with a change under review | Not yet |
| Refund Request Pending | A fee refund has been requested on the permit | Not yet |
Of permits issued June 2024 to May 2025, 85% were Closed by our count.
When the record you want is not online
LDS says to "Email LDSFOIA@fairfaxcounty.gov or submit the VFOIA Requests for Records form" if the online tools do not have it (LDS VFOIA Records Request). Check the retention schedule first: building plans and their supporting documents (applications, inspections, certifications) are "Destroyed three years after final inspection". For a house location plat, the county points to the Zoning Permit Review Branch at 703-222-1082 (all read 24 October 2026).
What our Fairfax County pages add
Our Fairfax County page counts the county's building records by kind of work, June 2024 to May 2026. Days to final are for permits issued June 2024 to May 2025 that closed.
| Kind of work | Permits (Jun 2024–May 2026) | Last 12 months on file (Jun 2025–May 2026) | Usual days to close (Jun 2024–May 2025 permits) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remodels and repairs | 9,936 | 4,819 | 86 |
| New homes | 2,134 | 862 | 273 |
| Additions | 963 | 481 | 177 |
| Garages, sheds and shade structures | 176 | 97 | 86 |
73% of the 18,103 permits were for homes. The permit statistics page has counts by year and month, how long permits take has the middle-half ranges (63 to 224 days for all permits), and browse permits lists the rows. Whether a job needs a permit is in Do I need a permit?
What this does not tell you
The county's open file has no contractor and no job value, so we show neither. It holds building permits only: electrical, plumbing, mechanical and roofing permits are not published, so those jobs do not appear in our counts even though PLUS shows them. Permits issued from June 2026 on were still arriving when the file was read, so our window ends in May 2026.
How we know this
PLUS, Development Tracker, LDIH and the records-request and retention wording are from Fairfax County Land Development Services' LDS Public Records page, and the search fields from the PLUS Building search page, both read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the county's Building Records PLUS open data layer, read 19 October 2026: building permits issued June 2024 to May 2026, certificates of occupancy left out.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Fairfax County?
Open the Building tab of PLUS (plus.fairfaxcounty.gov) and use Search by Address with the street number and name. For permits from before PLUS fully launched in October 2022, also search the Land Development Information History (LDIH) system.
- Can I search Fairfax County permits by contractor?
Yes. The PLUS building search has a Search by Licensed Professional Information option with fields for the business name and state licence number. The county's open data file has no contractor field, so our pages do not list firms.
- My address says Fairfax but the county has no permit for it. Why?
The City of Fairfax and the City of Falls Church run their own permit offices. If the house is inside either city, ask that city. Vienna, Herndon and Clifton are served by the county.
- How do I get old Fairfax County building plans?
Email LDSFOIA@fairfaxcounty.gov or use the county's VFOIA Requests for Records form. LDS says building plans and their supporting documents are destroyed three years after final inspection, so older residential plans may no longer exist.
- How long does a Fairfax County permit take to close?
For permits issued June 2024 to May 2025 that closed, the usual one took 120 days from issue: 86 days for a remodel or repair, 177 for an addition and 273 for a new home.
