McKinney, TX building permit search: the Customer Self Service portal and the City's permit file

To look up a building permit in McKinney, Texas, use the City's Customer Self Service (CSS) portal, the City's EnerGov system. The City's Development Services page says CSS is where you "apply for permits, make payments, request inspections", and links a "Searching for Records" how-to video for it; the Permits page gives the CSS help line as 972-547-7400 (both read 24 October 2026). The City's pages do not list which fields CSS searches by. In the City's published new-home and commercial permit file, McKinney issued 4,194 permits from October 2024 to September 2026, 3,360 of them for new homes.

Where to look for McKinney permits

The City permits property inside McKinney's city limits. Unincorporated Collin County and neighbouring Allen, Frisco, Prosper and Melissa issue their own permits.

Tool Search by What it shows
Customer Self Service (EnerGov) Not listed on the City's pages Every kind of permit the City issues, with inspections and fees; help line 972-547-7400
Snapshotv2 map service (City GIS, layers 3 and 4) Any field, including permit number, parcel and work class New-home and commercial building permits only, with issue date, completion date and declared valuation; our source

How to look up the permits on a McKinney address

  1. Open Customer Self Service and go to its public search. The City's Development Services page links a short video on searching for records if the screen is unfamiliar.
  2. Try the street address, or the permit number on your paperwork.
  3. Open every permit on the property. A new home, re-roof or remodel can carry separate building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits; water heater and re-roof permits are their own work classes in McKinney's system.
  4. Read the status and the inspection list of each one. A permit that never had a final inspection is the one to ask about.
  5. If you cannot find a permit you expected, call Development Services at 972-547-7400 with the address before assuming none was pulled.

What the statuses mean in our McKinney file

The City's published permit layers have no status column. They carry an issue date and a completion date, so our pages read them like this:

In the City's file What we show
Completion date filled Finished; days to final run from the issue date to this date
No completion date Open: still being built, or cancelled or lapsed (the file cannot tell them apart)

For permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 93% had a completion date by our 19 October 2026 snapshot: 98.7% of new homes and 66.0% of commercial permits. The live status of any one permit is in CSS, not in our file.

When the permit you want is not online

The City Secretary's page says to "Visit the Open Records Center to request public information" (City Secretary, read 24 October 2026). Name the address, the permit number if you have it, and the years you are asking about. The City Secretary's phone is 972-547-7505.

What our McKinney pages add

Our McKinney page counts the permits in the City's new-home and commercial file, October 2024 to September 2026:

Kind of work Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) Usual days to final (issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025) Finished
New homes 3,360 195 98.7%
Commercial and other 834 216 66.0%

New-home permits fell from 1,982 (October 2024 to September 2025) to 1,378 (October 2025 to September 2026). Across both kinds, the usual permit issued October 2024 to September 2025 took 196 days from issue to completion; the middle half took 160 to 251 days. For a new home that is roughly how long the build took. The permit statistics page has year and month counts, how long permits take has the spread, and browse permits lists the rows. To check a builder's or trade's licence, see how to check a contractor's license in Texas.

What this does not tell you

McKinney publishes dated permits only for new homes and commercial buildings. Its trade, re-roof, remodel, pool and other home permits are not in the file, so our totals are far below everything the City issues, and the file names no builder, so we do not list or rank firms. The valuation is the figure declared on the permit, not the sale price of the home.

How we know this

Portal, phone and records-request details are from the City of McKinney's Development Services, Permits and City Secretary pages, read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's Snapshotv2 Residential Permits and Commercial Permits layers, read 19 October 2026: permits issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in McKinney?

Search the address or permit number in the City's Customer Self Service portal (egov.mckinneytexas.org/EnerGov_Prod/SelfService). The Development Services page links a how-to video on searching for records there. For a definite answer, call Development Services at 972-547-7400.

  • Are McKinney building permits public record?

Yes. Permits can be searched in the Customer Self Service portal, and anything not online can be asked for through the City Secretary's Open Records Center, which is how Texas Public Information Act requests are made in McKinney.

  • Can I look up McKinney permits by contractor?

Not from the City's published permit file: its new-home and commercial layers name no builder, so we list no McKinney firms. Ask the builder for the permit number of a past job and check their licence at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

  • How long does a new home permit take to reach final in McKinney?

The usual new-home permit issued October 2024 to September 2025 reached the City's completion date in 195 days, and 98.7% of them had one by our 19 October 2026 snapshot.

  • How many new home permits does McKinney issue?

3,360 new-home permits from October 2024 to September 2026, 1,378 of them from October 2025 to September 2026, in the City's published permit file.
