| City of Oxford Community Development | Permit intake, zoning, historic district approvals | 513-524-5204, commdev@cityofoxford.org |
| GovWell portal | Applications, revisions, fee payment, issued permit documents | Online |
| National Inspection Corporation (NIC) | Building code review and inspections under contract to the City | 513-524-5205 |
| Clerk of Council | Public records requests | Request form |
| Building Permits layer (open data) | Permit type, status, issue date, value, contractor | Our source |
The City's page says "Building/NIC reviews are handled outside of the GovWell system", so inspection questions go to NIC. The City permits inside city limits only; Oxford Township and the rest of Butler County are not in its file.
How to find the permits on an Oxford address
- Email or call Community Development with the street address and ask for the permits on file and their status.
- If you have a permit number, ask whether the final inspection passed; NIC can answer inspection questions at 513-524-5205.
- For copies of permits or approved plans, file a request through the City's Public Records Request Form.
- If the job is new, ask the contractor for the permit certificate: the City says that once fees are paid, applicants get "electronic copies of the permit certificate, approved plans, and list of required inspections".
What the statuses mean
The City's open file uses these statuses. This is how our pages count them:
| Status in the City file | What it means | How we count it |
|---|---|---|
| Finaled, Closed | Work signed off, permit closed | Finished |
| Issued, Hold (Fee), Hold for Invoice, Hold for Review, Suspended (Fee) | Permit active or waiting on fees or review | Open |
| Expired | Lapsed without a final | Expired |
| Canceled | Never went ahead | Left out |
Of the permits issued May 2022 to April 2025, 61.9% had finished, 37.5% had expired and 0.6% were still open by the City's file, last updated June 2026. The file has no final inspection date, so we cannot show how long permits take.
When you need the record itself
The City's Public Records Request Policy names the Clerk of Council as the Public Records Custodian and says "The requester does not have to put a records request in writing and does not have to provide his or her identity or the intended use". The City aims to acknowledge or fill requests "within five business days". Records can be reviewed at the municipal building, 15 S. College Ave., delivered electronically "for no fee" where possible, or copied at cost, paid before copying (read 24 October 2026).
What our Oxford pages add
Our Oxford page shows what gets permitted in the city, from permits issued May 2022 to April 2026:
| Kind of work | Permits (May 2022–Apr 2026) | Of them, May 2025–Apr 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC | 258 | 54 |
| Electrical | 140 | 42 |
| All permits | 1,175 | 312 |
62% of the 1,175 permits were on homes. The permit statistics page breaks them down by year and month, and browse permits lists the rows without owner names or street addresses. To check a contractor's state license, use How to check a contractor's license in Ohio.
What this does not tell you
Oxford issues only about 300 permits a year, so we use four years of data and do not rate, rank or profile firms. The file holds no plumbing permits apart from gas lines, and the value is the declared job value, not the final cost.
How we know this
The permit process, GovWell and NIC details were read on the City's Building & Zoning Permits page, and the records rules on its Public Records Request Policy page, on 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City of Oxford Building Permits layer, read 20 October 2026: building and trade permits issued May 2022 to April 2026, City of Oxford only.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through April 30, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Oxford, Ohio?
Ask Community Development (513-524-5204, commdev@cityofoxford.org) or file a public records request with the Clerk of Council. The City's GovWell portal is for submitting and paying for applications; the City's permit page does not describe a public permit search.
- Who inspects building work in Oxford, Ohio?
National Inspection Corporation (NIC), a third party the City contracts for building code review and inspections. The City's permit page gives NIC's number as 513-524-5205.
- Do I have to put an Oxford public records request in writing?
No. The City's Public Records Request Policy says the requester does not have to put a request in writing or give their identity or intended use, though the City has an online request form. Electronic delivery is free where possible.
- What does Expired mean on an Oxford permit?
The permit lapsed without a final. Of the permits the City issued May 2022 to April 2025, 37.5% were Expired by the City's file, so an expired permit on a past job is common and worth asking about.
- How many building permits does Oxford, Ohio issue a year?
About 294 a year: the City issued 1,175 building and trade permits from May 2022 to April 2026. HVAC was the most common kind, at 258.
