Prattville, AL building permit search: the Building Division, the City's permit layer and records requests

The City of Prattville does not describe an online permit search. Its Building Permits page says requests for permits "are submitted on forms/applications" that you print and bring to the Building Division at the City Hall Annex, 102 West Main Street, and its Building Services page gives 334-595-0400 and building@prattvilleal.gov as the contacts (both read 24 October 2026). So to check a permit on an address, ask the Building Division. For older permits, the City's Building Permits map layer lists permits issued from 2016 until it stopped in mid-2022: 4,446 of them from June 2020 to May 2022.

Where to look for Prattville permits

The City permits property inside Prattville. Millbrook, Autaugaville and unincorporated Autauga and Elmore counties are not covered.

Tool Search by What it shows
Building Division, 334-595-0400, building@prattvilleal.gov Address, permit number Current status and inspections of any permit
Building Permits layer (City ArcGIS) Any field, including permit number, address, permit type and contractor Permits issued 2016 to mid-2022, with type, sub-type, issue and expiry dates and contractor; our source
Public Records Request Form (City Clerk) A written request Copies of permit files

The City's other online portal, a citizen portal for work orders and reporting problems, is not a permit search.

How to look up the permits on a Prattville address

  1. Email building@prattvilleal.gov or call 334-595-0400 with the street address and, if you have it, the permit number. Ask which permits were issued and whether each passed its final inspection.
  2. For a job done between 2016 and mid-2022, open the City's Building Permits layer, choose Query, and filter the Address field by your street (for example Address LIKE '%MAIN ST%').
  3. Read every permit on the property. Electrical, plumbing, gas and mechanical work on a new house are separate permits, and the letters at the start of the number tell them apart: E electrical, P plumbing, G gas, M mechanical, BR residential building.
  4. Check the contractor named on each permit against the one on your contract.
  5. For copies of the file, send the Public Records Request Form.

What the statuses mean in the City's file

Status in the City's layer Share of permits issued Jun 2020–May 2022 What it means
Issued 91% Issued; not a sign the work is open (see below)
Closed 7% Closed out by the City
Approved / Approved with Conditions about 1% Approved, not yet issued
Void / Withdrawn under 1% Cancelled

The City kept permit status up to date only in 2018 and 2019, so most later permits still read Issued whether or not the work was finished. We show no finished share and no time to final for Prattville; the Building Division can tell you whether a specific permit passed final.

What our Prattville pages add

Our Prattville page counts the permits the City issued, June 2020 to May 2022, the last two full years in its layer:

Kind of work Permits (Jun 2020–May 2022) Share
Plumbing (with gas) 1,211 27%
Electrical 1,078 24%
HVAC 752 17%
New homes 592 13%
Fences and walls 163 4%
Garages, sheds and shade structures 161 4%
Remodels and repairs 128 3%
Pools and spas 102 2%

79% of the permits were for homes. The permit statistics page has year and month counts, and browse permits lists the rows. A new-home builder's licence can be checked with the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board.

What this does not tell you

The City's layer stops with applications filed in June 2022, so nothing more recent is in our pages. It names contractors, but because it is four years out of date we do not rate or rank firms from it. A declared value is on only about a quarter of permits, so we show no costs, and the file has no ZIP code.

How we know this

Contacts, the paper application process and the records request form are from the City of Prattville's Building Permits and Building Services pages, read 24 October 2026. Our counts and statuses are the City's Building Permits ArcGIS layer, read 20 October 2026: permits issued June 2020 to May 2022.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 20, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Prattville?

Ask the City of Prattville Building Division at 334-595-0400 or building@prattvilleal.gov. The City's pages describe no online permit search. For a permit issued 2016 to mid-2022, you can also filter the City's Building Permits map layer by your address.

  • How do I get a copy of an old Prattville building permit?

Submit the City Clerk's Public Records Request Form on prattvilleal.gov, naming the address and the years you want. The Building Division is at the City Hall Annex, 102 West Main Street.

  • Does the City of Prattville permit Millbrook or the county?

No. Millbrook, Autaugaville and unincorporated Autauga and Elmore counties are permitted by other offices and are not in the City's permit file.

  • What does Issued mean on a Prattville permit?

In the City's permit layer, usually nothing about whether the work finished: of permits issued June 2020 to May 2022, about nine in ten still read Issued, because the City kept status up to date only in 2018 and 2019. Ask the Building Division whether the final inspection passed.

  • How many building permits does Prattville issue?

About 2,223 a year in the last two years the City published: 4,446 permits issued June 2020 to May 2022. Plumbing led with 1,211, then electrical with 1,078.
