How to look up permits on a Raleigh address
- Open the portal. In the top-right corner, use the dropdown next to Guest, as the help center describes, and start a general search.
- Type only the house number and street name, leave off the suffix, and click the magnifying glass.
- Open each record and read the type, the issue date, the status and who it was issued to.
- Check that name against your contract. The North Carolina license checks are in the Raleigh license lookup.
- If the portal will not find the address, call the Permit Helpline on 919-996-2500.
What the statuses mean
The status to look for is Permit Finaled, which is what our pages count as finished. Our pages time a permit from issue to the City's final date. Building-permit trades (decks, pools, ADUs, new homes) are rarely marked final in the file, so they show no speed, and we don't show a finished share in Raleigh because it did not separate contractors in our tests (Raleigh about page; methodology).
| Trade | Permits | Firms | Usual days to final |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical | 16,812 | 942 | 91 |
| Plumbing | 9,188 | 513 | 133 |
| HVAC | 10,761 | 638 | 121 |
| Deck | 1,101 | 459 | not recorded |
| New home | 1,703 | 206 | not recorded |
So a Raleigh electrical permit still open well past 91 days is slower than usual; ask the contractor when the final inspection is booked.
When the record is not online
The City's Development Records page says "Records that are available on the Permit and Development Portal will not be provided in any other way." For building plans and related documents, it says to "submit a records request via our online request form" (raleighnc.nextrequest.com), which issues a tracking number, and "Fees for approved paper plans must be paid prior to pick up" (read 23 October 2026).
What our Raleigh data adds
The portal is organised by address and record. Ours lists every Raleigh permit under the firm that pulled it: the Raleigh permit statistics, and the compare lists for electricians, plumbers, HVAC and new homes. Which jobs need a permit: Do I need a permit?

How we know this
Portal instructions and records-request wording are quoted from the City of Raleigh's Permit and Development Portal Help Center and Development Records pages, read 23 October 2026. Our counts are City of Raleigh building and trade permits on homes, October 2023 to September 2026.
Numbers come from City of Raleigh building permits, data through October 12, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Raleigh?
Search the address on the City's Permit and Development Portal (permitportal.raleighnc.gov). The City says you do not need to register to search public records; enter only the street number and street name, without Drive or Road.
- Are Raleigh building permits public record?
Yes. The Permit and Development Portal provides records on land development and construction, and anything not there, such as building plans, can be asked for with the City's online records request form.
- How do I get old Raleigh permit plans?
Submit a records request through the City's online form, which gives you a tracking number. The City says records already on the portal will not be provided any other way, and fees for approved paper plans are paid before pick-up.
- Can I search Raleigh permits by contractor?
The City's help pages describe address search only. Our Raleigh pages group 40,032 permits from October 2023 to September 2026 under 2,929 firms, so you can open any firm's record.
- How long does a Raleigh trade permit take to final?
In our file the usual electrical permit reached final in 91 days, HVAC in 121 days and plumbing in 133 days, counted from issue to the City's final date.
