Bismarck building permit search: eTRAKiT and the issued permit lists

Bismarck's permits are in the City's eTRAKiT portal. Its Search Permit page searches by site address, permit number or permit type, and the Building Inspections Department says registered contractors and public users can apply for permits and request inspections there (Building Inspections, read 23 October 2026). The department also posts Issued Building Permits lists, monthly for 2026 and yearly back to 2011. In our Bismarck file, 455 firms pulled 6,867 permits on homes from October 2023 to September 2026.

How to look up permits on a Bismarck address

  1. Open Search Permit.
  2. Pick Site Address, choose Contains, and type the street number and name.
  3. Open each permit: read its type, status and the contractor on it.
  4. An inspection can only be requested while the permit status is ISSUED, the City says; requests go through eTRAKiT a day ahead, or to Building Inspections on 701-355-1465.
  5. Mechanical contractors are licensed by the City; the state and City checks are in the Bismarck contractor license lookup.

What the statuses mean

Our pages count FINALED as finished, timed to the finaled date. Void and withdrawn permits are left out. The City finals only about a quarter of furnace and AC replacement permits, so that trade has no speed and low finished shares for everyone (Bismarck about page; methodology).

Trade Permits Firms Finaled (a year or more old) Usual days to final
HVAC install 751 40 90.2% 142
Furnace and AC replacement 2,098 23 24.5% not measured
Electrical 1,669 77 84.5% 233
Plumbing 844 44 81.7% 277
Deck 191 78 86.6% 58
Remodel and addition 323 113 72.9% 272
New home 708 70 76.2% 351

Bismarck's permit system starts in September 2022, so no firm has a record here before then.

When the record is not online

For permits issued before eTRAKiT, start with the yearly Issued Building Permits lists, which go back to 2011. The City's pages we read on 23 October 2026 did not describe a separate request process for older permit files, so ask the Building Inspections Department directly on 701-355-1465.

What our Bismarck data adds

eTRAKiT is organised by permit. Ours groups the same permits by firm: the Bismarck permit statistics, and the compare lists for HVAC, electricians, new homes and remodelers. Which jobs need a permit: Do I need a permit?

How we know this

Search fields are from the City of Bismarck eTRAKiT Search Permit page; inspection rules and contacts from the Building Inspections page; list coverage from the Issued Building Permits page, all read 23 October 2026. Our counts are City of Bismarck permits on homes, October 2023 to September 2026.

Numbers come from City of Bismarck TRAKiT building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits on homes, data through October 14, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Bismarck?

Open Search Permit on the City's eTRAKiT portal and search by Site Address. You can also scan the City's monthly Issued Building Permits lists.

  • Are Bismarck building permits public record?

Yes. Permits are searchable in eTRAKiT, and the Building Inspections Department posts lists of issued building permits by month for 2026 and by year back to 2011.

  • Can I search Bismarck permits by contractor?

eTRAKiT's permit search takes site address, permit number or permit type, and the portal has a separate Search Contractors page. Our Bismarck pages group 6,867 permits from October 2023 to September 2026 under 455 firms.

  • Why can't I find a Bismarck permit from before 2022?

The City's current permit system starts in September 2022, so older permits are not in eTRAKiT with a contractor. The yearly issued-permit lists go back to 2011; for anything else, ask Building Inspections on 701-355-1465.

  • Why is my Bismarck furnace replacement permit still open?

It is common. In our file only 24.5% of furnace and AC replacement permits a year or more old were finaled, against 90.2% of HVAC installs. Ask the installer whether the final inspection was requested.
