What it costs
From the County's Permit Cost page, read 23 October 2026:
| Residential fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Electrical permit | $60 |
| Prior cut on, electrical / gas | $60 |
| Emergency reconnection | $120 |
| Excessive inspections (after 2 failed) | $50 |
| Starting work or working without a permit | $100 |
| Failure to obtain final inspection when job complete | $100 |
An electrical job inside a remodel that needs two or more inspections is priced as a "major" alteration at $0.221 per square foot with a $400 minimum, and that fee "includes all trade permits". A one-inspection "minor" alteration is $60.
Who can pull it
A licensed electrical contractor. North Carolina licenses electricians through the Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors; search the firm on its Verify License Search. License classes cap job size; the steps are in the Wilmington contractor license lookup.
You, as owner-builder, within the County's terms: "Generally intended for owners who will occupy the home as their primary residence for at least 12 consecutive months", and it "May not apply to" LLC-owned, investment, resale or rental properties (FAQ).
Applying and inspections
- Apply in COAST; COAST shows the itemised invoice. Questions: coast@nhcgov.com.
- Request the inspection in COAST before 3:30 p.m. for the next business day. Inspections run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the County does about 300 a day, so there is no set time slot.
- On a service change, ask the electrician whether a prior cut-on or a reconnection is needed and who requests it; both carry their own fee.
- Expiry: six months if work does not start, or 12 months of stopped work after it does (G.S. 160D-1111, quoted on the FAQ).
What 1,662 Wilmington electrical permits show
| Measure | Wilmington electrical |
|---|---|
| Permits, October 2023 to September 2026 | 1,662 |
| Firms | 414 |
| Firms with a permit in the 12 months to September 2026 | 191 |
| Completed (permits a year or more old) | 83.0% |
| Usual days from issue to final | 54 |
| 10th / 90th-percentile firm (10+ permits) | 65.4% / 94.0% |
| Busy firms under 70% completed | 6 of 38 |
| Share held by the five busiest firms | 13.2% |
| Firms with one permit | 191 (46.1%) |
| Busiest / quietest month (index, 100 = average) | January (114) / September (83) |
Wilmington's electrical work is spread thin: the five busiest firms hold only 13.2% of permits, and 46.1% of firms filed one. With no dominant names, the firm's own completion rate is the check that matters, and it ranges from 65.4% at the 10th-percentile busy firm to 94.0% at the 90th. 63.8% of permits carry a value, and the middle half of firms' usual filed value runs from $2,500 to $34,902, because the category mixes a single circuit with whole-house rewires; it is not a price guide.

What this does not tell you
The County names the contractor on only about half of recent electrical permits, and an electrical permit pulled by the builder of a new house counts under the builder. Beach towns and unincorporated New Hanover County are not in our Wilmington view. North Carolina publishes no bulk license file, so we show no license status.
How we know this
